DNCC_logo_dnc2008_1_500.jpgI missed Hillary Clinton speaking at the Hispanic DNC Caucus because I was dealing with the nightmare that was the picking up of credentials. But our student correspondent, Estevan, was there so he’ll be blogging his thoughts later.

I did arrive in time to see Howard Dean, who focused on the need to register Latinos and get them to vote. He also spoke of how the Republicans scapegoat Latinos and how McCain flip-flopped on his own immigration reform plan.

ICE Raids In Mississippi

12:38 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration · Comments Off

The underground grapevine has been buzzing the past few weeks with news that a potential ICE raid was brewing in Mississippi. Looks like the rumors were true.

Federal immigration agents raided a major manufacturing plant in south Mississippi on Monday, but it wasn’t immediately clear how many illegal workers were taken into custody.

Barbara Gonzalez, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman, said the target of the operation was Howard Industries Inc. in Laurel, a town of about 18,000 people located about 85 miles southeast of Jackson.

Latin@s Don’t go to the Doctor

11:23 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Health · Comments Off

25 Aug 2008

stethascope.jpgA new report suggests that Latin@s are only going to the doctor when they suspect or are suffering from health problems, and many don’t even go then. There are many of the usual suspects listed as reasons for not going (lack of time, money, access to doctors), but one in particular stood out to me. Latinas aren’t going to the doctor because they are scared of the “cancer” diagnosis:

Some women wait to seek cancer treatment because they’re hoping the problem will go away or because they think nothing can be done. “Our population feels that cancer equals death,” said Ramirez, who works on cancer education and outreach projects.

I don’t think that this fear is something that is particular to the Latin@ community-but at the same time, I know that I personally waited to see a doctor for three months after I discovered a lump under my armpit. It turned out to be connected to chronic muscle problems I’d been having in that arm, but still. The only reason I got it checked out was because I felt I better begin preparations for my death, rather than simply waiting to keel over.

I wonder what we can do as a community to help each other get out to the clinic or the doctor before we come to crisis moments in our health?

I caught this new McCain ad as I waited to board my plane to Denver yesterday. My initial reaction was : How the hell is it McCain’s business why Obama didn’t pick Clinton as his running mate (it probably has nothing to do with the pretty overt racism carried out by her campaign- right?).

DNCC_logo_dnc2008_1_500.jpgAfter a long ass and insane trip in that included McCain fans in LaGuardia Airport, avoiding tornadoes while sitting in the narrowest airline seats ever next to a scientist who built a telescope in the South Pole (Hi Jeff!), to a stupid shuttle, I mean super shitty shuttle that took me three hours from when I landed in Denver to get me to my hotel, to almost not having a room to sleep in because of massive credit card machine failure. After all that VivirLatino esta presente at the Democratic National Convention!

20080823elpepudep_33.jpgTaekwondo isn’t a sport for the faint of heart, but the violence needs to be kept in the ring and the kicks directed at your opponent. But Cuban martial artist Ángel Matos apparently doesn’t see it that way. When Matos was down for count during yesterday’s finals match due to an injury, the ref called time, giving the win to opponent Arman Chilmanov of Kazakhstan. As Chilmanov celebrated jumping up and down, Matos jumped up himself and began screaming at the referee. His trainer joined in in the belaboring of the ref. Then the stadium went still as Matos delivered a huge kick to the referee’s unexpecting face.

Both Matos and his trainer, Leudis González, have been banned from ever participating in the Olympics again as a result of the attack. According to Spain’s El País, González insists that Kazakhstan “bought” the judges, bribing them into ruling in favor of their team.

5bcdb97ec3682795fe6738751dffa715_extras_albumes_0.jpgNot too many of us will have had the energy to stay up all night to watch the game, but I’m here to tell you that the U.S. men’s Olympic team was unstoppable in the final match-up with current world champion, Spain. I was only able to catch the last quarter, and it was a super tight game. Spain and the U.S. were both at the top of their game (Spain was down an average of only 6 points) and it was disputable whether or not The Dream Team would actually win this one up until about 2 minutes before the final buzzer. In the end, the stars of the NBA triumphed over the Spaniards 118-107.

Spanish media is calling Spain’s loss a win, referring to the game as “the most dignified defeat” and “a golden silver medal”, given the fact that they were so very close to winning against the world’s most storied basketball team.

Argentina is also celebrating its triumph as bronze medal winners in basketball, stepping up to the podium in third place. An excellent representation for Latin America in one of the Olympics’ most watched sports.

070201_JoeBiden_vl.widec.jpgThis morning, we woke up to the news that Barack Obama has chose Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware to be his running mate. I know I didn’t get the text message I signed up for but that might have been for the better. The announcement went out via text message and email at about 3 a.m.

Joe Biden has all the experience that Obama’s critics say the presidential nominee lacks. Biden is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Latino Organizations Call for End to Wars

I often find that major Latin@ organizations like National Council of La Raza have very little relevance in my life, but for once, this time, they got it right.

In explaining his group’s war opposition, Trasvina said that Latinos “are overrepresented in the military; many are immigrants who are fighting for our country before it becomes their country.”
