When Reality is Ignored by the Political Theorists : Mississippi Raids Ignored

26 Aug 2008

Loretta Sanchez called me a “girl” when I asked her about the Mississippi ICE raids that have led to the arrest of 350 people.

From Citizen Orange:

Numerous agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement descended on a factory belonging to Howard Industries Inc., which manufactures electrical transformers, among other products.

As of late Monday afternoon, no criminal charges had been filed, said Barbara Gonzalez, an agency spokeswoman, but she said that dozens of workers had been “identified, fingerprinted, interviewed, photographed and processed for removal from the U.S.”

Yesterday, I attended a forum on Immigration Reform held by the NDN.
Speaking on the panel was Janet Murguia of NCLR, Frank Sharry, U.S. Representative Zoe Lofgren (CA-16), and Marco Lopez, Jr, former Mayor of Nogales.

U.S. Representative Zoe Lofgren (CA-16) spoke against an enforcement first approach to immigration reform and how sealing borders is not practical. She was called out by Robert Lovato, because of her support of the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill, which had a strong enforcement policy. He asked about raids being put at the forefront of the immigration conversation and movement.

What struck me yesterday, I was went to Latino themed events, the issue of immigration, ICE raids, and their wider impact on the community as a whole was mentioned, but it was all theory or stories of what had happened in the past, while at that very moment, in another part of the country, families were being physically torn apart. And these men and women, parents, bread-winners, aren’t following the blogs or the mainstream media coverage on the issue of immigration reform. It’s not an issue. It’s a day to day fear. A reality, a warning.

Marco Lopez, the former mayor of Nogales, Arizona, and in fact the youngest mayor at 22. His focus at the NDN panel was very law enforcement heavy, making a distinction between criminal undocumented immigrants and “regular” undocumented immigrants. Lopez, emphasized that the “border is not a shield for criminality” and talked about how
everyday we ignore the problem (of immigration) it is silent amnesty.
He also criticized what he saw as a lack of federal responsibility.

Frank Sherry described the current immigration strategy as non-violent ethic cleansing (which looks pretty damn violent if you ask me and probably the communities living in fear and being torn apart).

Janet Murguia of the National Council of la Raza made the important point, that the current climate regarding immigration has created racial profiling and hate crimes against all Latinos because none of us wear our status on our backs. Unfortunately, she looked at assimilation as a clear marker of how much immigrants are like us. This analysis is concerning because it seeks to erase culture and create a white, cultural hegemony.

Meanwhile in Mississippi:

The ICE spokeswoman, Ms. Gonzalez, said the workers would be taken to an ICE detention center to “await the outcome of their cases.” She said 50 would be “released into the community” instead of being sent to the center, for “humanitarian reasons,” including medical difficulties or the need to take care of children.

She said no lawyers were present while the workers were being interrogated. “Everyone will have due process under law,” Ms. Gonzalez said.

excellent points Mamita–that *any* Latin@ politician could be at this place and not screaming to any media they can get a hold of about this raids–even as the raids are happening!–is a disagrace and shows how little relevance so many of these ‘leaders’ really have.

Thanks for this thoughtful in site. It’s amazing to me that so many people of color still believe there is as we are becoming more and more of the majority that assimilation is the road to salvation. Either you are for the constitution – justice for all – and you believe in everyone’s right to safety, a home, education and good health, or you don’t. You can be on both sides of the fence.

I ask this one simple question. What profound wrong is the USA and its Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency committing by merely enforcing the law that all countries around the world enforce and most of them with more severe penalties? Compared to the way Mexicans treat Hondurans and Guatemalans crossing in Mexico you would think that these holier than thou human rights activists would be down there trying to make a difference where there are Real Human Rights issues not all this trumped up BS the ACLU spews

Well, Cuchillofile, I’m not Mexican. And while I care about human rights worldwide, I figure I might as well deal with what is happening in my own back yard before I go stopping into somebody elses country and decide what’s best for them.

Saying that we’re not as a bad as all them is not a standard I am willing to use when it comes to human rights in my country.

The US needs Mexican workers; people who aren’t afraid to work with the land, raise our children, do hard labor or show the beautiful colors of diversity. There should be no border and most importantly…

Separating families and putting both children and adults in prison will never stop the actual abusers – the Walmarts, large farmers and Gallo Wineries and the likes from abusing human life.

It’s our horizontal hate that keeps us down. There is enough money, food and resources for us to adsorb all the Mexican’s and Canadians that want to cross the boarders. All we have to do is stop supporting the debilitating policies of the rich that keep us down with the dream of going somewhere.

There is enough for everyone. There is enough for everyone. There is enough for Mexican workers and seniors alike. It’s all about distributing the wealth fairly. I’m very thankful for the ACLU if not for them we would be shooting our neighbors and their families at the border.

Well La macha it is a little unclear what you mean by “human rights”. If you are referring to the seperation of parents from their children why aren’t you protesting on behalf of the children of thieves, robbers and other various criminals in prison seperated from their parents. I noticed you didn’t say if you felt the USA was committing a profound wrong for merely enforcing immigration laws common in all countries of the world. These parents crying about being seperated from their kids have only themselves to blame they knew the consequences of their actions and please tell me when having a child exempted you from being responsible for your actions. They can take their children with them.
And Freshencounter tell me how that land of plenty, there is enough for everyone working out in California with their huge budget defecits in the billions and billions of dollars with many hospitals closing due to the there is enough for everyone crowd (mainly disrespectful, dishonest, arrogant illegal aliens) coming for their free pre natal and maternity treatment and once they have their little niño Thats when they really make a grab for their enough for everyone> They then receive Food Stamps, Sec 8 housing, free medical, welfare, pre k school program, WIC etc. And its such a waste these people are really poor excuses of parents around here the dropout rate amongst illegal and children of illegal aliens is 40%

Freshignorant, I don’t know what world you are living in, but it sounds like you were possibly dropped on your head a few times as an infant. First of all we don’t need foreign workers from anywhere, including Mexico. The U.S. has millions of abled-bodied people living off government handouts and federal social services. Those people need to be denied these services and forced to find a job instead of living off the taxpayers nickel. These are the physically abled folks that can fill the jobs you speak of.

The E-Verify system will prevent companies from hiring people who can not legally work in the U.S. If the company fails to use the E-Verify system and hires illegal aliens, they should suffer heavy penalties including the loss of their business license. Every country has labor laws to prevent foreigners from taking jobs that could be filled by their citizens. The U.S. should be no different.

You either don’t understand what a dangerous world we live in or you don’t want the U.S. to remain a soveriegn nation. Wide open borders is a recipe for mass destruction and the deaths of millions of Americans. There are several radical terrorist organizations intent on the complete devastation of Western civilizations. You allow them easy entry by having wide open borders, you could be signing your own death warrant along with millions of others. For now and forever let’s keep America secure and not turn it into an easy target.

“There is enough for everyone”. What???? You must be delusional or you don’t support yourself. The U.S. has a population of over 300 million people, all using what few resources we have. Our oil supply comes from those that are not too friendly to us and we pay out the nose for it. Our economy is already on shaky ground and the dollar is devalued. You can’t buy today half of what you could just 10 years ago for the same amount of money. Allowing millions of more people into the U.S. would create the same type of economy that China or India has. People would be living in the streets and the crime rate would soar to unbelievable heights.

As for your lame idea of wealth redistribution, well it’s just lame and has never worked in any socialist country. It may start slowly, but eventually it would create a sub class of society that lives off the upper working class. If I work hard for a paycheck and the government takes half of my earnings to house, feed, clothe and support someone sitting on their ass all day, drinking beer and watching Oprah, why would that person have any incentive to ever go to work and support themselves? And if I were able to survive off of someone elses income, why would I want to work? So, eventually there would be more of the leaches of society and fewer workers to support them, That trend would continue until nobody would work and everyone would be on government cheese. Pretty stupid idea unless you believe the U.S. should be communist where the dictator has the choice to either take care of you or let you die or exterminate you like a bug.

Step into reality, get off the drugs, get a job and stop trying to live in your fantacy La-La land of unicorns and rainbows. Life is hard, get use to it, strap up your boots, and be an American our forefathers would be proud of.

Dear Eyes – you need glasses. The so-called able-bodied Americans you speak of don’t live where the jobs are and wouldn’t be physically capable of doing many of these jobs due to their lifetime exposure to the American lifestyle i.e. fast food and TV. As for the U.S, and the resources it uses; simple fact the US accounts for about 2% of the world’s population but uses over 25% of the world’s resources. Sounds to me like we’ve already redistributed the world’s wealth – right into our own 2500 square foot houses, our 2.5 gas guzzlers per household, our TVs for every room, our meat based diets, etc. In fact, feeling like you do Eyes why not write your senators and congresspeople and tell them to get rid of NAFTA and CAFTA and stop meddling in the governments and economies of the Latin American nations like we’ve been doing for the last 150 years and stop allowing big US corporations from doing the same. Sorry, that’s repetitive – big corporations are the government. But not to worry the US will never be communist it’s already fascist.

OMG. The idiocy. What’s is fucking wrong with these comments?

First of all, I will tell you something about YOUR country. Your country is a World Power. One that colonizes and uses imperialism to expands its borders. One that is REALLY responsible for the awful situation in Latin-American countries. However you look at it, capitalism is a reality, and it affects every country in this world. We are bombarded with ‘white culture’ and ‘white products’ and guess in what country I live. I live very, very south in America in a country I bet you don’t even know the name.

Oh, you need to ‘protect’ its white people! Sadly, the poor, third-world people doesn’t have the same luck than you have to have a ‘document’ that says their are from a first world country. That’s why immigration happens. And yeah, poor brown people goes to work in works that no ‘white able bodied’ person would do, no matter how capable they are of doing. A hierarchy exists, and you are in the top of it. Accept it. Families are suffering violence and terror due to that hierarchy. And no, I’m not talking about those middle-class, white families that watch on tv, while sitting on their couches, that ‘terrorists’ will attack their country.

You are talking about how Maegan doesn’t focus on ‘every poor person.’ Well, if you are talking about ‘white poor people’, they have a lot of people that will talk about them. ‘Poor people’ means ‘white poor people.’ They don’t need more adjectives. You see, you can focus in a lot of things at the same time. She doesn’t need to talk about Guatemala to talk about the awful situations of immigrants in her country. Why don’t you do that if you think that those are ‘more important’ matters? You just don’t want to hear about latin@ immigrants in USA, so you think it’s better to focus on human rights violations in other countries. Why aren’t we talking about poor people in Japan? Well, we could be talking about them, and we could be talking about latin@s immigrants.

Rose I am a descendant of a Latin immigrant my wife is Salvadoran but now a naturalized citizen my oldest daughter is still a mexican citizen but with permanent residency. I don’t know why you are cussing unless the truth hurts, Where we have lived has become very very blighted due to the influx of disrespectful illegal aliens who feel they don’t have to do things the right way, dishonest illegals who use false Id’s and stolen ss no’s to obtain employment, and arrogant to the point they feel that laws regarding driving licenses and insurance do not apply to them in addition they feel that the fact they have evaded law enforcement for a certain amount of time entitles them to “special” privileges” such as a free pass from immigration procedures and extra funding to educate their kids in a bilingual enviornment. This is a huge contrast to the deepfelt respect for the privileges and benefits afforded those that have stood in all the lines paid all the fees and submitted to all the screenings to be granted residency here.
When these scofflaws are caught and scream about how unfair it is I feel absolutely zero sympathy for them. If I was in their country and my visa expired I would make every attempt to fix it or leave immediately. It is not the fault of the USA or the responsibility of its citizens to sponser all the poor of Latin America no matter how you try to twist it these countries have been in control of their own destiny all along. There have been at least 2 revolutions in Mexico with the government overthrown with no change. And in addition to that foreign ownership of property and business has been prohibited in most cases and severly restricted in other cases for close to a century. So please quit making excuses blaming the USA for these people incometence and incapabilities and please please stop the invasion soon the USA will deteriorate into the same bola of misery these people came from

Wow. Just… wow. Those have to be the most bigoted, racist things I have heard this month. And that’s… wow.

I don’t know what to say. You clearly don’t know what capitalism is and how it works. What, do you think some poor people are criminals because that’s how nature made them? Do you really think brown people have poorer countries than white people because they… just are more incompetent? Do you think people like being poor, and being exploited by big corporations? So USA white-people are superior, huh.

And in addition to that foreign ownership of property and business has been prohibited in most cases and severly restricted in other cases for close to a century.

WHAT? what? AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Oh. That made me laugh.

I don’t know. I think this qualifies for a ban.

Rose… I am not sure where you saw anything I said in reference too ethnicity or brown people, perhaps you are overly sensitive.
I for one appreciate very much the ethnic diversity in the USA. People of all colors and races are successful here by working and remaining focused to acheive their goals. The differences are more cultural rather than what ethnicity someone is

Cuchillofile, whatever the hell you are talking, you are fucking racist.

See, culture doesn’t have anything to do with nothing. Poverty has everything to do with it.

People in First-World countries are lucky to have access to the best education and the best quality of life in the world. Developing and third world countries don’t have the same resources, the same education, and the same life. You know why they don’t? Oversimplificating, because they lost wars in the past, they were colonized and exploited. Of course, there are pretty complex political and economical dynamics and relations that explain why some countries are far worse than others, and many of those dynamics have to do with race. But, again, I’m oversimplificating. I’m not going to explain it to you, I don’t have the patience.

And you know what? There are moral and ethical reasons why you, a man living a decent life in a rich and powerful country, attempting to be a moral authority to poor immigrants, or to people living in Third World countries set me on fire.

Yes Rose I do thank the Lord daily for the benefits afforded to myself and my family. But you appear to be filled with hate and envy and I am tired of hearing you fault the USA for all the shortcomings of all the countries south of the Rio Grande so I bid you good day and wish you well in your future endeavors
