Election Time WTF: Daddy Yankee Endorses John McCain

18:37 H | Topics: Celebrities - Music - Politics - Puerto Rico - US Presidential Race 2008

daddy-yankee-5.jpgIt's not like we expect much from Daddy Yankee politically speaking. Hell, I don't even expect him to be aware of the upcoming presidential elections (unless, of course, he reads VL in between perreos), much less endorse a candidate. But that's just what he's done (video after the jump) and if you've read the headline, you already know that it's not who you might have expected. A huge WTF was bellowed toward the sky after I read this post from The Washington Post's The Trail blog after getting a tip from a reader:

The high school girls standing on the risers behind Sen. John McCain looked like any high school girls would during a talk by someone Paris Hilton might describe as "a white-haired dude." They clapped politely.

And then, when McCain introduced his special guest, they freaked out. They gasped. They put their hands over their mouths. They screamed.

Daddy Yankee, one of the country's top Latino music stars, strode out, wearing mirrored sunglasses. A Puerto Rican reggaeton recording artist, he appeared next to McCain to endorse the Republican nominee and perhaps give him a boost with Hispanic voters.

But for the girls, all that -- and McCain -- was beside the point. What they thought was going to be a boring, political event was suddenly way cool. Yankee turned and hugged a few of the girls, who put their shaking arms around him.

He then endorsed McCain, saying that "I believe in his ideals and his proposals to lead this nation" and that McCain was the best "fighter for the immigration issue."

McCain stood with Yankee in a downtown Phoenix high school that his wife, Cindy McCain, had attended as the Democratic Party opened the first day of its national convention. Daddy Yankee will be flying on the straight talk air today to California.

"I just want to say thank you Daddy Yankee," said McCain, who also referred to him as Ramon, since his given name is Ramon Ayala. McCain said Yankee has been married 15 years, had grown up poor in Puerto Rico and made "the right choice" in life.

So is it all about immigration for Yankee? What about the multiple other McCain policies that hurt -- or kill -- Latinos, such as his stance on "staying the course" in Iraq? And has he really looked into McCain's immigration policies behind what's obvious on the surface?

Like I said before, I didn't expect much from Daddy Yankee, but nothing would have been better than this. Et tu, Daddy Yankee?

Yeah, I had my own WTF moment over that myself this morning. Why couldn't he just stay apolitical? Ah well, at least I have Calle 13 to provide me with my Boricua reggaeton fix. They may not be perfect but with tracks like "Querido FBI" at least we know they won't be endorsing any conservative pendejos any time soon.

I am never going to listen to his music again. But then I rarely do.

More power to Daddy Yankee. He's got the right to support whomever he wants. However, if he's supporting someone I don't support. I have the right to no longer support him.

So what if Daddy Yankie supports McCain. Good for him for having the courage to speak up for what he believes in. I think young people are feeling extreme peer pressure to always go with the democratic candidate. I think people need to study the issues and pick a president based on who seems to have a better plan for us. Don't pick your president based on who your friends and pop culture says you should support. And if you look at the general initiatives supported by republicans, you would realize that Latinos are natural republicans: pro-life, work hard for your money, traditional family structures, etc. Think about it, and be true.....don't worry about fitting in all the time and don't hate on people who are ACTUALLY keeping real.

I am shocked, saddenned, sickened and disgusted by Daddy Yankee's endorsement of John McLame. Daddy Yankee says that he supports McLame's ideals. That means Daddy Yankee supports the US war of genocide in the Mid East, an upcoming war with Iran and Russia as well. He also supports the destruction of the US Constitution, the quisling! Sadly many young Puerto Ricans and other Latinos will be asked to sacrifice their lives for McCain and Bush's death cult. Something that Daddy Yankee obviously embraces.

I'm not arguing that Daddy Yankee can't support the candidate of his choice. He has the right to do that. But he has to live with that despicable choice. And I have the right to say that he is a sellout mercenary traitor who turned his back on where he came from. McCain and Daddy Yankee can go to hell for my part. Daddy Yankee, don't expect your fairy godfather McCain to come through for you, payaso! Shame, shame shame!

Ok, he has the right to endorse who he wants....but others have the right to call him on it, too. And I think a lot of people will, public & otherwise. What a hypocrite he is...trying to make out that "Gasolina" was a critique of the Iraqi Oil Hostile Corporate Takeover, I mean Iraq war.
I'm sure lots of latinos are "natural Republicans", just as many are "natural Democrats", and as Republicans are the party of the rich it'd make some sense for Yankee to want to "protect his goods" (=avoid paying taxes).
But to align oneself with the ideological madness of the current Republican leadership is quite a stand. Even many fiscal conservatives (lots in my family) who normally vote Republican won't vote for them anymore. Bush, McCain etc are not "conservatives", they're Fundamentalists.

I am an International Relations Specialist, and some of the comments on this page are among the most ignorant statements I've ever rear! Honestly, comments like Daddy Yankee supports 'genocide in mid east' are so ridiculous, i've seen better understanding of foreign policy from pre-schoolers! Mid East first of all is not genocide..it's war! Now the reasons for the war may be beyond your basic comprehension, so I won't go into detail. As to why he couldn't stay apolitical..wow!! Is that your solution to a better world, just sit on your butt while everything else falls apart? If more people made the effort to get involved maybe we could get out of this mess, it's ignorant people like you that are responsible for Iraq and global warming and everything else. Good thing for me, I make money off your ignorance!

I would like to start out by saying that gloating about your work is not a good way to get people to take you seriously. In fact it is in a way a deterrent because you make yourself seem arrogant and bias. In all actuality you are probably a college student (like myself) whom is studying that particular major. Now to get back on topic. There is a genocide happening in Africa and by not helping to stop it the US is technically letting it continue. We made a promise several years ago that we would not ever let that happen again, and It seems like we are bad at keeping promised thus far. Other than that I just think you should let people make up their own minds and argue with them in a convincing yet respectful manor. The worst way to try to convince people of something is to try to belittle them. Next time you should try showing how your canidate (or issue) makes more sense...etc I hope this has helped.

WOW McCain must be desperate. But i wouldn't buy his junk.

10. pete ~ Sunday, Oct 12 2008 | 23:02H:

LOL Daddy Yankee is endorsing McCain? Who does he want pardoned? Maybe he has the hots for Cindy. We young latinos love good looking older women. Either case, thanks Daddy, you're a real asset to the Boriqueños.

Response to Figlia: If you are an international relations specialist, God help us all! You must be one of those neocons. I've been overseas many times, and America looks really bad to the rest of the world. America looks like a belligerent warmonger who has to borrow abroad to finance their genocidal wars. But for an "Meriken" like you I guess that's just fine. And I will say it again, the war against the Iraqi people is a war of genocide; and I will keep saying that until the cows come home. But America is falling apart economically and I'm glad to see karma visiting America. To paraphrase metaphysisist Edgar Cayce: America is finally meeting itself. God Bless Fat Joe who called Daddy Yankee out on his endorsement of war criminal McCain! BTW Figlia: the war against Iraq violates Article I Section 8 of the Constitution of the US. But I guess people like you don't give a tinker's damn about the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights like your heroes Bush and McLame! Good Day!

Daddy Yankee is a no talent SELL OUT!!! I cannot stomach and boardline hate Daddy Yankee. Many urban latinos are really uneducated as to the motives of the United States. The only reason why Puerto Rico is part of the US because of the United States fear of Puerto Rico becoming Communist like Cuba. The United States has done nothing for Puerto Rico especially the Republican Party. They have done absolutely nothing for the Latinos and this idiot (Daddy Yankee) has the audacity to come against immigrants???!!! Please all Latinos do not buy anymore of this idiots music. Personally I have never bought any of his CD's because his lyrics are degrading and an embarrassment to educated Latinos that have common sense. Any policies that affect our latinos brothers eventually affect all Latinos because the Republican Party is really known to be white, rich people (With a few exceptions) and typically racist. What a really stupid idiot moron Daddy Yankee is.

Daddy Yankee I hope you go under!!!!!!!

I got mad respect for daddy yankee right now. and if I was in the same position he is I would join him on supporting McCain. everyone endorsing Obama are ignorant as hell, especially when he has no record of helping hispanics and a huge one of ignoring and oppressing them. Yea you don't here how obama raised taxes on latino small business in chicago, or how he hasnt bothered visiting latin america and showing his support knowing how many of us live in the states and still have our roots in those countries, even worse obama went to Puerto rico, took his money from a fundraiser and bounced didnt bother, to stop to talk to the people of the island. and showing his support.

14. Steven ~ Friday, Oct 17 2008 | 18:39H:

and you all want to whine about a war in iraq. what about worrying about the war in your streets. something even daddy yankee has fought to stop. yea ya never say nething about innocent kids dieing over the nonsense. but you worry about iraq? i dont approve of the war, but atleast at the end of them figting there are some people benefiting and being free from an oppression. here are people die because of ignorance, and self arrogence, and you cant just blame the government for that. Cause if you cared enough you could change and progress in life. this is the only country you can do that, and there is endless opportunity, you just havent bothered to look for it or take advantage of it because of ur own self absorbtion.

15. Steven ~ Friday, Oct 17 2008 | 18:44H:

I was born into a democratic party, and in the past years its democrats who have made me struggle and made our people struggle. The republicans are so bad, yet it was the republicans that freed the slaves, it was the republicans that, gave immigrants in the u.s. amnesty.
Fat Joe's ignorant ass says that republicans killed her sister, because a bronx hospital didn't give her healthcare. HOLD UP?!!! south bronx? new york city mayor? democrat! new york state governor? democrat! new york senate? democrat. Federal government cant completely over rule state policies, esp healthcare. but wait? even if they could? u.s congress? dominated buy democrats. fat joe is rich if the healthcare was so bad and he loved her so much why didnt he take her to another hospital. he lives in paramus nj. the areas has one of the best hospitals in the world and her brother had the money to provide the medicine
