Brazil to Pay for Sex Changes for its Citizens

4:25 pm By Maegan La Mala · Brazil| GLBT| Latin America| society · Comments Off

brazil-flag.gifA major move in the right direction in Brazil with regard to trans rights: the government has decreed that it will subsidize all gender reassignment procedures for its citizens:

The decree was published in the official bulletin and recognizes sex changes as a “right”, as was defined in a 2007 decision which the government denied a reversal, in spite of protests by conservative and religious groups.

The only requirements for the subsidized procedure is that the patient be over 21, and have undergone 2 years of psychological evaluation, which means that the first procedures will not take place until 2010.

Spain’s 20 Minutos reports that the Brazilian Health Ministry projects that without the economic barrier, the procedure might be requested by one out of every 10,000 Brazilians.

Early Puberty in Girls Linked to Environmental Pollution, Plastics

1:25 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Environment · Comments Off

21 Aug 2008

I just finished reading a really important and somewhat frightening essay about how early development in young girls (those that develop as young as 7 or 8, or as in one case, as young as 14 months) is linked to environmental pollution and plastics.

An excerpt:

When I began looking into environmental causes, however, a clearer picture began forming. Dr. Sandra Steingraber, author of the Breast Cancer Fund’s comprehensive 2007 report “The Falling Age of Puberty in U.S. Girls” considers early puberty to be “an ecological disorder” resulting from a complex web of environmental influences. Pollutants, plastics and chemicals may be the hidden causes of early puberty in girls, and Black girls seem to be more vulnerable.

I did not develop early, but I had two friends that did, and they were harassed mercilessly by boys and men alike. But sexual harassment should not be the only reason to be concerned about the link of early puberty to pollution/plastics–that would imply that if we just keep our girls childlike, sexual harassment and violence would stop happening. We need to fix the entire mess we’ve created, environmental pollution, sexual violence, lack of health care resources, food safety–everything.

rbd2.jpgBecause apparently, there aren’t enough issues for young people in the world today to be passionate about and hit the streets over, at least one member of the Mexican pop group, RBD, that announced its breakup, is going down with a fight. Anahi wrote to her fans:

Quiero pedirle a todos los fans que por favor no nos dejen solos. Estoy bien loca, porque en el foro de la página oficial ya les dije que hagamos una marcha mundial y me regañaron, que por qué ando haciendo cosas así.

Jose Can You See? Border Patrol Abusing Migrants

Border-Patrol_03.jpgColor us shocked. The idea that a law enforcement agency would abuse people, especially migrants just astounds us. Ok, so sadly it doesn’t really but it adds another layer of anger. On Tuesday, a former Border Patrol agent pleaded guilty to assaulting an immigrant.

Santiago Perez, of Edinburg, admitted Tuesday in federal court in Houston to both cases of violating the civil rights of the two immigrants while working as a South Texas Border Patrol agent in 2006 and 2007.

One immigrant, from Guatemala, was hit in the face with a pistol, and the other was interrogated with a gun pointed at his head.

And yes, the Border Patrol agent was Latino, which is an example of how it is the culture of law enforcement that is racist, not just a matter of a few individuals.

This year, Dominicanos Aventura will also be performing, meaning there is gonna be a strange but wonderful mix of Latinos in midtown later tonight.

Countdown to the DNC : Denver’s Homeless to Get Coiffed

DNCC_logo_dnc2008_1_500.jpgThe Democratic National Convention is only days away, and everyone is getting themselves beautiful for the event, including the homeless in Denver.

There are an estimated 4,000 homeless people in the DNC host city and instead of attempting to find real solutions, it’s much easier to do a makeover. That is, hide them from view, pretend they don’t exist, and fix em up so they don’t look so unsightly.

They arranged for free movie passes and bingo games to get them off the street, as well as temporary housing and free tickets to the zoo and Museum of Nature and Science…According to Rick Sallinger of the CBS TV station, Denver Human Services has been handing out coupons for free homeless haircuts.

But what happens when the media eye shifts away from Denver and the balloons have been deflated?
