Countdown to the DNC : Exhibit Highlights Denver Latino Artists

august-group.jpgWith the Democratic National Convention kicking off in exactly one week and VivirLatino being there live to cover the action, we feel it’s important to look at the community around where the convention is taking place. Given all the media play given to the Latino vote, what of the Latinos in Denver?

One art exhibition in Denver now through the end of the month, seeks to answer that question through the lens of 6 Denver area Latino artists.

Chicano Humanities Arts Council Presents
Artistas Revolucionarios Aug. 1-30 in Denver
A daring palette, subversive strokes and renegade self-expression are characteristics of Artsitas Revolucionarios; a slightly less than seditious show on display through August that showcases the talent of six emerging and established Denver Latino/a artists.
The work, which includes a superb collection of colorful paintings, drawings and jewelry, serves as a glorious reminder of the vibrant cultural art scene our city has to offer.

Los artistas are CHAC Board Members Tony Vecchio, Danny Vigil (website), Javier Flores and Jeanette Montoya; CHAC’s Education Director, Veronica Herrera; and this year the show includes CHAC member JOLT.

VivirLatino is going to check out the exhibit when we’re in Denver.

You can find out more about the exhibit here.

Via / Immigration Talk from a Mexican American

I’m not sure I appreciate the effort at alliance building this author engages in. The basic point of his article is to show all different groups of people why voting for Obama is in their best interests. He makes a point of talking to Latin@s:

For Latinos, I know you guys just wanna get along and become true blue Americans. So I can’t blame you for not lining up with us forever-complaining black folks. After all, you guys were not dragged into this country in chains for free slave labor; you traveled here on your own free will.

It just gets better from there. He even holds an imaginary conversation with his Mexican son “Eduardo.”

It makes me wonder if this guy is secretly a Republican or something. I wonder what he hopes to accomplish by insulting those he is supposedly trying to convince?

In the ongoing confusion of whether or not we should like ‘the illegals’ or not, several themes keep popping up. One theme is how fat, lazy and unhealthy Mexicans are. The other theme centers on the perpetual debate of “Are the Illegals an Economically Sound Investment?” The debate sounds something like this:

Speaker One: The illegals drain our economy and suck up all our resources!

Speaker Two: Undocumented workers pay millions of dollars into the system but rarely get much of anything out of it.

Here’s nice summery of such a discussion all done up neatly in letter format.

My question: Since this debate pretty much reduces undocumented workers to the equivalent of the beat up car out front that is next in line to be towed away (should you let it be towed or pay the fines to keep it?), I really have to wonder what the purpose of the debate is and why immigration rights advocates keep engaging in it.

Is there a different way to consider the benefits of immigration?
What do you think?

The Problem With Palm Oil

Ever wonder what levels of destruction were wrecked on the environment, wildlife and indigenous populations so that you can eat some Cheez-Its? I appreciate the Rain Forest Action Network, as they really seem to understand how their interest in the environment is connected to something seemly unrelated, like exploitative labor practices or the protection of animals.

How you can help.

SO000300-gun-in-backpack.jpgIn one rural Texas school district, teachers are adding one extra thing to their back to school shopping lists. Concealed weapons.

A local school board, Harrold Independent School District, in rural North Texas unanimously passed the policy to allow its teachers and staff to carry concealed hand guns to school. According to Fort Worth Star-Telegram, since the tiny 110-student school district was just off a heavily trafficked freeway, US 287, they felt the police was too far to respond quickly if there ever was an emergency. Therefore, the school board passed CKC (LOCAL), Safety Program/Risk Management Emergency Plans, which states:

Recognizing that District schools are located in a somewhat isolated area and that response from emergency first responders, including law enforcement personnel, takes a minimum of approximately 30 minutes, the Board adopts the following policy to address concerns about effective and timely response to emergency situations at schools, including invasion of the schools by an armed outsider, hostage situations, students who are armed and posing a direct threat of physical harm to themselves or others, and similar circumstances.

For a teacher to carry a conceal handgun, they are required to have a Texas concealed handgun license, undergoing training in crisis management, and hostile situations and must use ammunition designed to minimize the risk of ricocheting bullets.

Has lawsuit abuse spread to Latin America as well? An Uruguyan woman is suing her employer because she has no work to do. Spain’s 20 Minutos reports that a city government worker in Rio Negro, Uruguay, Emilia Colman, spends her entire day doing nothing except “looking at the ceiling” from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Colman claims she’s asked her boss to give her work but her pleas have gone unanswered, so she’s suing her employer for the equivalent of 25,000 euros for “morale damage”. She is also asking for a 3,000 euro per year raise.

While on the surface this might sound silly, it seems that Emilia might have been getting the boot from her employer in a roundabout way. There are many cases where an employer has made working conditions so miserable that the employee has no choice but to leave (remember Milton from Office Space?). And that’s what Colman believes is happening here. She’s been working for the city since 1999, and 3 years ago they changed her from one area to another. First she lost her office, then she lost her computer. Now she has nothing to do.

Nothing to do without a computer is brutal. As my office worker friends can attest to, having nothing to do at work can be fun. As long as you have the Internet.

EMERGENCY CALL TO ACTION

FRIDAY, AUGUST 22ND at 4:00 PM

JOIN US IN PROTESTS AT I.C.E. OFFICES ACROSS THE NATION !

In DETROIT: Joins us in front of the I.C.E. Office At East Jefferson Ave & Mount Elliot at 4:00PM

It is imperative that we send a message to I.C.E., President Bush and the upcoming Democratic Party Convention that there must be AN IMMEDIATE MORATORIUM ON ALL RAIDS, DEPORTATIONS, INCARCERATIONS AND SEPARATION OF FAMILIES.

On the defensive after congressional hearings that raked I.C.E. over the coals for the cruel, abusive and “Gestapo like” raids in IOWA, I.C.E. responded with a so-called “humanitarian” way to deport half a million people – AND THEIR U.S. CITIZEN FAMILIES!..

I.C.E. announced that it has OVER 100 TEAMS of agents working full time to seek out and arrest these 500,000 people who, even accord ing to I.C.E., have done nothing wrong except come to this country, accepted employment from U.S. companies, pay taxes and support their families.

Already we have witnessed I.C.E. agents waiting outside of schools and day care centers to track down parents. I.C.E. has enlisted police in some states to set up road blocks as people come to church on Sunday. I.C.E. agents are coming into our neighborhoods in the dead of night and knocking on our doors, terrorizing our children.

THIS MADNESS MUST STOP!

On Friday, August 22nd, we call on all organizations and concerned individuals, but especially LATINAS, to organize protests in front of your local I.C.E. office at 4 p.m. (at your local time) to demand an immediate moratorium

on raids, deportations, incarcerations and separations of families until comprehensive immigration reform is finally agreed on in the next Congress

Ask your delegates and especially members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to stand with you on Friday, August 22nd, in front of I.C.E.

We call on Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama to make clear their commitment to our community by joining in this call for an immediate moratorium on the convention floor!

Spanish Rafa Nadal is officially the number one tennis player in the world, having swiped away the title from Swiss Roger Federer at Wimbledon a few weeks back. And he further proved his dominance this weekend as he picked up the gold at the Olympics for men’s tennis. Here he is yuckin’ up with the press with the Queen of Spain looking sporty at his side:

Rafa beat Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez, but the defeat left Chile in not such a bad spot: taking home the silver medal for men’s singles. Watching Gonzalez get his medal – the first one for Chile in these Olympics — is quite moving.

Congrats to Rafa and Fernando!
