For those of you out in the Southwest region, get your spoons and salsa out! Check out this amazing tour! (It’s featuring my favorite Chicana performers ever, Chica Boom and Ms. Cherry Gallete!)
Mangos With Chili began as an annual touring cabaret of queer and trans people of color performance artists. Founded in 2006 by sister femme vixen performance artists Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha and Ms. Cherry Gallete, our breakout 2007 tour took 8 queer and trans performers of color to 8 cities in 12 days, raising a $13,000 budget through grassroots funding and door revenue. Mangos with Chili has received positive media coverage from Bitch and Make/Shift magazines (making Bitch’s Summer 2008, “Bitchlist: Things We Love”) as well as in independent and campus media and raves from audience members for reflecting the lives and stories of queer and trans people of color. We are the nation’s only traveling cabaret of QTPOC artists and are unique in being multi-gender – we consciously curate artists whose genders span the gamut from transwoman to Two Spirit to femme to trans fag to non-trans queer men. We create community, build bridges and foster cross-cultural dialogue by presenting breathtaking shows featuring queer and trans of color artists creating high-caliber work that we tour to different geographic regions each year, hitting urban areas and college campuses, as well as the occasional small town. Sharing much-needed and little heard queer and trans of color stories brings together queer and trans people of color out from isolation, helping QTPOC build networks of love, support and survival.

It wasn’t enough for Jon Justice to violate human rights activist Isabel Garcia by sexually assaulting her in effigy. Now he wants to make sure that she can’t support herself.
Now, according to WOC PhD, Jackass’s efforts to have Isabel Garcia removed from her position as a public defender is in full swing. The Arizona state bar is investigating her because she participated in a protest against Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s latest book, full of racist and xenophobic diatribes against Latin@ immigrants. (This is the same Arpaio facing lawsuits from the ACLU for refusing to transport pregnant inmates to abortion clinics upon their requests and for racial profiling of Latin@s in Maricopa County.)

Ay, the anti-immigrant forces. When they aren’t pissing us off with telling us to go back where we came from, they are always good for a laugh.
Any nativist will tell you that polls show 1,000% of ‘Mericans support speaking only English in the United States of America. It doesn’t matter if the U.S. can’t even understand the languages of the countries it goes to war with (you don’t need to understand people to shoot at them). If people can’t speak English like they’re supposed to, they’re not real ‘Mericans.
Using this iron-clad logic, I thought I’d compile a list of five English lessons for those that want to learn to how to be a real ‘Merican and speak English.”
To see the lessons go to The Sanctuary.

Every day innocent Iraqi civilians are killed because of the ongoing, U.S. led war there. We don’t hear about those deaths. Instead what we do hear about are the deaths of soldiers, and one of the latest deaths is that of a N.Y Latino.
Sgt. Jose E. Ulloa, 23, died Saturday when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive in Sadr City, the Pentagon said.

The current economic slump in which the U.S. finds itself in is making life hard on everybody. Rising gas prices and the mortgage fallout are making Americans spend less money, and in turn, business is slow. And it seems that Latinos are the hardest hit group by all of this.
From New York to Miami to Los Angeles, the downturn in the U.S. economy is hitting Hispanics especially hard, with unemployment rising faster in that community than in the overall U.S. population. And the slowdown has had a ripple effect, with a significant drop in payments being sent home to families in Latin America.“For the last year, Hispanics have been losing jobs at a faster rate than any other group,” said Agustine Martínez, president of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Washington.
The Baltimore Sun reports that unemployment among Latinos is nearly 2 points higher than among the general population, and that salaries for Latino workers are “stuck”. Remesas being sent back to Latin America are said to be down by 70% since 2006.
It’s hard times and everyone’s apretándose el cinturón. Have you had to cut back on expenses just to make ends meet? Where are you spending the most money and what, if anything, do you have to sacrifice? Let us know in the comments.

We’re used to seeing groups like the Minutemen at the U.S.-Mexico border promoting their particular point of view, but a completely different kind of organization is heading to the frontera to get its own message out. It’s animal rights group PETA, which is campaigning to show immigrants from Mexico that the diet that awaits them on American soil is hazardous to their health. Hmm…
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans today to announce an unusual marketing pitch to the U.S. government: Rent us space on the fence for billboards warning illegal border crossers there is more to fear than the Border Patrol. The billboards [pictured], in English and Spanish, would offer the caution: “If the Border Patrol Doesn’t Get You, the Chicken and Burgers Will — Go Vegan.”
“We think that Mexicans and other immigrants should be warned if they cross into the U.S. they are putting their health at risk by leaving behind a healthier, staple diet of corn tortillas, beans, rice, fruits and vegetables,” said Lindsay Rajt, assistant manager of PETA’s vegan campaigns.
