7 Aug 2008“Dale a tu cuerpo alegría Macarena…” Remember those profound lyrics? I hate to make you feel old, but that little ditty just turned 15 and the middle aged Spaniards behind it are trying to relaunch their career…in the United States. Apparently they think that they can capitalize off the popularity of quinceañera parties stateside.
The remix of the song is titled “Fiesta Quinceañera Macarena”, alluding to its 15th birthday and a party that is celebrated each year by thousands of Latino teens in the United States.
The return of the Macarena was recorded entirely in the U.S., between New York, Miami and Los Angeles, and will be presented there through two events in Disney theme parks on both coasts.
I was never a fan of the Macarena and even less now, so I can’t understand why this might have a shot at a comeback. But then again, there are people who still dance the Achy Breaky Heart.

7 Aug 2008From the newsobserver we get the story of Marxavi Angel Martinez, a North Carolinian woman who is now facing imprisonment and deportation because of her legal status. Martinez was born in Mexico, but brought to the U.S. at the age of three and has lived here ever since.
Unfortunately, Martinez has been using the social security number of a deceased person since she’s lived in the U.S. It’s her use of the social security number that has got her in all sorts of trouble now, even though she may not have even known that her number was not hers:
Martinez, who was arrested in the library, is charged with four federal felonies, all related to what authorities say was her use of a dead person’s Social Security number. If found guilty, she would face several years in prison before being deported.

Wanna show off some alumni pride? Or how about that cap of your favorite baseball team? If you look at the label of your cap and see that it was made in the Dominican Republic, chances are it was made in a sweatshop.
Sweatshop workers stitch logos into caps for Major League Baseball, the NHL, the NBA and the NFL.
Many college caps are made there, too. One company, BJ&B, for example, manufactures caps for the Universities of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Missouri, Connecticut, Arizona, Louisiana State, Cornell, Northwestern, Penn State, Tulane and Purdue…Here’s how it works: A university licenses its name and logo to American apparel distributors like Nike, Starter, Champion and Reebok, and earns about $1.50 per cap. BJ&B, for example, then pays the worker 8 cents per cap. At that pay rate, a worker takes home $40 for a typical 56-hour work week, as calculated by UNITE, an anti-sweatshop lobbying group. The total cost of making the cap comes out to about $6.08, but consumers pay about $19.95 for the cap.
The good news is that BJ&B workers, thanks in part to universities’ pressuring, formed a union but they are only one sweatshop in a sea of free-trade areas that allow companies located there to be exempt from import fees and income taxes on the backs of workers.

Only 18 more days till the Democratic National Convention in Denver.
VivirLatino is psyched to be covering the convention as credentialed bloggers.
Something we’re not to psyched about? The possibility of mountain lions.
A mountain lion slunk into the master bedroom of an Idledale home early Monday, snatched a yellow Labrador retriever and vanished.
Churchill said the residents had left open the French doors to their bedroom, apparently to cool the house, and didn’t have screens.
The dog’s body was found near the property.
If we had a dog, we wouldn’t bring it with us to Denver.
Don’t forget, you can help VivirLatino get to the DNC by donating.

Last night, An super secret source was inside the taping for an episode of next season’s Top Chef. The episode of the hit Bravo show was filmed on 27th street on the East Side and involved the contestants cooking food for an AIDS organization. The winner was chosen by the people at the dinner (about 300) placing red ribbons on the dish they liked best.
Also present at the taping was Miss Universe, Venezolana Dayana Mendoza. She was fully clothed, unlike the recent fotos of her that have surfaced. My source said that Mendoza is tall, slim, and with booty to spare.
Makes sense that she was at this AIDS charity themed Top Chef challenge, as she is the latest madrina for the Latino Commission on AIDS.
By the way the president of Miss Universe, Paula M. Shugart, said that Mendoza is not in danger of losing her crown over the recently revealed nekkid pics.
