C13-In the studio-JROne of my favorite Rican musical duos is set to drop their third album and based on the title alone, it promises to be as politically charged as ever. Calle 13’s new album, set for release on October 7th, is called Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo, or in English, Those Left Behind are Coming with me.

Despite commercial success, the Rican hermanos haven’t been afraid to tackle controversial issues head on, like immigration and the FBI murder of Machetero leader Filiberto Ojeda Rios.

The first single off the new album, with the same name, is set to drop later this month.

Statue_of_Liberty_FREE_l.jpgIt is perfectly acceptable to imply the rape of a Latina human rights activist like Isabel Garcia by a white man like Jon Justice.

But imply the rape of a national symbol turned woman, a presumed white woman raped by undocumented immigrants, implied male and Latino, and this is supposed to inspire a love of country, patriotism. That’s exactly what hate jock Michael Savage intended when he said:

[Y]ou turn on the cable news, they’re covering again a missing child. Not a missing country but a missing child. … We hear about the rape of a woman, but not about the rape of the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty is crying, she’s been raped and disheveled — raped and disheveled by illegal aliens

HiroshimaCloud.gifIt was 63 years ago today that the United States government unleashed an atomic attack on the civilian Japanese city of Hiroshima. The 9,700-pound uranium bomb lovingly named “Little Boy” killed about 150,00 people from the impact and continued to kill thousands for years after, from the radiation.

jose_medellin.jpgThe U.S. Supreme Court did not grant a reprieve to Jose Ernesto Medellin and executed him last night based on a 1993 conviction for raping and killing two Texas teens.

“I’m sorry my actions caused you pain. I hope this brings you the closure that you seek. Never harbor hate,” Medellin, 33, told those gathered to watch him die. He was pronounced dead at 9:57 p.m. local time.

The Mexican national’s case has drawn international attention from all sides of the political spectrum. Some have taken his case as an example of all that is wrong with U.S. immigration policy and used Medellin as a scapegoat in their anti-immigrant (and let’s be real, anti-Latino) campaign.

Pro-human rights activists globally protested the impending execution, saying it was a violation of international law. Even the Bush administration, State Department, and Attorney General intervened, asking for a delay in the execution.

Latin@s Underrepresented on Olympic Team

dara%20torres.jpgApparently it’s a problem that Latin@s are not as represented on the Olympic team as they are in the general populations. Our lack of Olympic involvement probably has something to do with our evidently overwhelmingly sedentary ways.

I’m really not sure what is going on with the constant influx of news stories about fat, lazy, unhealthy Latin@s recently, but I’m getting kind of sick of them. Especially since nobody really seems to know what a Latin@ even is.

Witness the following paragraph from the SI article:

Swimming, unlike track and field, has a scarcity of both blacks and Hispanics in its upper echelons – the 56-member Olympic swimming and diving squad has one black and no Hispanics. USA Swimming, the sport’s governing body, has acknowledged the problem by launching extensive learn-to-swim programs in black and Hispanic communities.

I guess that Latin@ swimmer, Dara Torres, doesn’t count as “hispanic”? Sure, one Latin@ is not much better than no Latin@s, but it’s really hard to take an analysis of underrepresentation seriously when the most obvious example of representation is completly omitted. What other Latin@ Olympian has been completly written out of existence to make a point?

So who is the target audience for this ad? Bible toting evangelicals who swear that as soon as Obama gets into office he will unleash his secret Muslim agenda onto the world?

DIY Deportation Plan Not Really Working

ICE%20raid%20santa%20ana%20calif%20jan%2017%202007%20ap%20photo%20mark%20avery-thumb.jpgLike a page ripped from The Onion: ICE’s new deport-yourself plan isn’t such a hit among undocumented immigrants. Surprisingly, people who have risked their lives and left their families behind to have a better life on U.S. soil are reluctant to leave. How about that?

That invitation drew hardly any takers Tuesday on the first day of a new federal “self-deportation” program that offered 457,000 eligible illegal immigrants the chance to turn themselves in, get their affairs in order and leave the country without being detained.

The tepid response only reinforced doubts about an idea that has drawn criticism and even ridicule from both sides of the immigration debate.

“You would have to be crazy — who would want to turn themselves in?” said Angel Martinez, a construction worker who waited Tuesday outside ICE’s Charlotte, North Carolina, office while his son visited a friend detained on immigration violations.

Indeed, Mr. Martinez. I’d like to know who the knucklehead behind this idea was. I think we could have saved the government the few million they’ve likely spent if they would have bounced the idea off of us first.
