5 Aug 2008As I am currently abroad, and my politics swing far to the left (had you not noticed?) this apparently means that I am getting updates from Democrats Abroad, a non-profit organization trying to get out the important but too ignored expat vote for these elections.
I’m not really a Democrat (if interested email me and ask why…too tedious to indulge myself here) but definitely not a Republican, so I submit to you Democrats Abroad’s latest ad.
Remember when Gwyneth Paltrow raised a stink by touting her ex-pat status and criticizing the U.S.? Well all you flag wavers can bash her again as she is reinstating her expat (albeit responsible voter) status with this ad:
The ad’s not all that but the message is sound. No matter where you are, vote. No matter if you are like me — suspicious of voting protocol and fairness — just VOTE.

5 Aug 2008Conferences about AIDS/HIV are important and generally a good thing, right? But what happens when the people most affected by AIDS/HIV are (perhaps deliberately) kept out of the conference? Who is a conference like that really benefiting?
Some 25,000 people are expected at the event, which draws scientists, international agencies, government officials, non-government organizations and the media.
But people most at risk of the disease, such as sex workers, homosexuals and intravenous drug users, are least visible. Most are poor and cannot afford registration fees.
“The conference is a place to exchange opinion but now, only those in power have a say,” said Elvira Madrid, an activist working for the rights of sex workers in Mexico City.

Looks like we are baby obsessed this week…The latest word on the street is that Mala’s favorite hunk, Gael García Bernal, is going to be a dad. People en Español reports that sources close to Gael and the purported mom-to-be, Dolores Fonzi, say that Fonzi is 4 months pregnant.
But it seems that congratulations aren’t exactly in order. Back in May People en Español reported that Gael himself released a statement saying that he and Fonzi are only friends and that they weren’t expecting a baby. Makes me think that this latest rumor isn’t necessarily to be trusted.
