File under self-hatred a lo Europeo. Plastic surgeons in Spain are reporting a barrage of requests from Central American and South American immigrants wanting to undergo plastic surgery to make themselves look “more European”. According to doctors around 2500 immigrants submit themselves to procedures such as rhinoplasty (nose jobs) and other types of surgery to modify their faces.
“What they want is for people not to recognize them as foreigners and go unnoticed,” explains plastic surgeon José MarÃa PalacÃn.
The surgery is said to cost around 5000 euros (around $7800) and 20 Minutos reports that the majority of immigrants that request the surgery are Ecuadorian and Colombians living in Madrid.
This is of course a terrible thing, but it also makes me stop and think: what is happening in Madrid that makes immigrants feel the need to go to these lengths to “go unnoticed”?

This is really sad and really is about the internalized self hate but also I wonder how much of it is a measure of safety, a means to find a better job, make sure you aren’t a victim of a hate crime. I’m not condoning this, just thinking beyond judgement….

That’s exactly what it’s about. There have been numerous crimes against immigrants all over Spain by neo-Nazi elements and that was my point, there is something wrong in the society that makes these people feel this is necessary, be it a lack of safety or opportunities. In fact, in the article one guy is quoted as saying
“en caso de que quiera cambiar de trabajo seguro que me cuesta menos porque parezco más occidental”.
WTF!?

I have to disagree with Jennifer, and I bank that she probably hasn’t lived there… In Spain it’s a different kind of bigotry, nothing like the US. Having experience in living there, being called SUDACA is no walk in the park. The bigotry in Spain has more to do with they being culturally ignorant, rather than hate. ie not knowing enough about a people or ethnic background, thus a underlying xenophobia rather than racism. For example look on youtube about that Ecuadorian girl that got clobbered on the Barcelona metro, and read the story, and then the criminal judge’s report.
This notably occurs with people who more Ameridian features than mestizos. Immigration is more of right in Spain from those of the Red Comunidad IberoAmericana (aka the Spanish version of the commonwealth, which includes African Countries Ecuatorial Guinea, Angola, Mozambique, Westerm Sahara, las Filipinas, and any class of Sephardic Jew) In other words those from “IberoAmerica” can immigrate with more ease legally or “illegally” like hopping on a plane on tourist visa and changing their status upon arrival is allowed depending on their IberianAmerican country of origin. This right, albeit a constitutional one, under article 11 of the Spanish Constitution allows nationality within 2 years as well, and with it, access to the rest of the EU.
It has to do more or less with Spain’s ability to grasp diversity issues like their European neighbors (like France and the UK) and the US. Spain is for lack of better word having to face racial equality issues for the first time, now with the influx of Chinese, Indians and Bangladeshi. Like the ignorant anglo of north america who thinks anything international revolves only around Mexico or Canada, that dynamic transmutes into the common Spaniard who thinks anything international is South America (sudaca) or North African (un moro)
Thus, it is better to go unnoticed given that this open door immigration policy currently and sharply divides the nation and the foreign policy to Iberoamerica. Usually PSOE, Spain’s current administration implemented new directives to keep the policy the same, and opened more access to Latin Americans, he appointed a domincan to his party cabnet, and Equal Employment and Equality office. While the conservative PP likes to prey on this ignorance as ESPANA PARA LOS ESPANOLES!
Long story short it has to do more with the legislation being more progressive than the current social normative and the real reality that Spain will turn into a multicultural society in the next 20 years as Madrid as epicenter of their colonialism, like London is to the British Commonwealth and the Indo-Pak trying to integrate into British society well over 50-60 years ago. Until that social norm is harmonized with the current legislation and its liberal application, in keeping with maegans la mala’s thought of going beyond judgment, until Spanish society tackles the racial equality issues in a more astute manner.
So it would behoove Jennifer to refrain from the “WTF” comments since not aware of what it’s like to live there and the real possible validity the quote might actually have in Spain today.
