18 Jul 2008I set my google alert to notify me of all instances of “raids” being discussed in the news recently. And the results have been surprising. I expected to get links to stories about ICE raids here in the U.S., but instead, most stories have been about drug raids conducted throughout the world. Apparently, the War on Terror did not end the War on Drugs.
Dominican Police and United States (FBI) investigators yesterday conducted searches in several towns of Altagracia province(east), where they seized properties worth millions from the Benítez brothers, four Cuban nationals charged with defrauding the U.S. Social Security for US$110 million.
More than one hundred SWAT and other agents participated in the searches and occupied the cabañas Mi Casa and Singapur, located near Higüey, where an unspecified amount of money and firearms were also seized.
There was a good question in comments:
Oh goody who gets to divide up the loot…..and will the public see any benefits…or just a bunch of off duty cops partying in speedboats and cabana jacuzzis
I wonder who we could go to for the answer?

Venezuela is known for its record number of beauty queens and schools that churn them out like an assembly line. What Venezuela is not known for is protecting the lives of the rest of it’s female population. Amnesty International issued a report that said that the country’s making laws that protect women from familial and spousal abuse isn’t enough, especially if the state isn’t going to enforce it.
Amnesty International’s Americas Programme Deputy Director, Guadalupe Marengo, said:
‘The 2007 Venezuelan law to protect women from violence is an example for the rest of the region but it will be useless for women unless it’s fully implemented.
‘Implementation of the law means more shelters, special tribunals and training for those who have to deal with these crimes.’

We’re told to “get a sense of humor” and ironically to “lighten up” when it comes to our reaction as people of color to racist imagery and histories being put up on magazine covers and more recently, on a tee shirt.
When a 25-year-old Manhattan graduate student who was assaulted Tuesday night got dressed that morning, she probably didn’t anticipate that her T-shirt would provoke four teens into shoving her, pulling out her earphones and spitting in her face.
Then again, with a shirt sporting the slogan, “Obama is my slave,” it may have been wise to consider the possibility.
Now she’s suing the $69 shirt’s designer, Apollo Braun, for “all he’s got,” the designer claims.
But the Israeli-born Braun — born Doron Braunshtein — says what allegedly happened to his now-disgruntled customer isn’t his fault — and that his outrageous design reflects not his views but those of “ordinary WASPs.”
