andjusticeforall7.pngSometimes you have to put politicians feet to the fire when it comes to being clear and real about an issue. The hot-button immigration issue, especially as it relates to the mythic Latino voting block has gotten lots of play by the presidential candidates. Recently both John McCain and Barack Obama played amigos to Latinos at the LULAC conference. This weekend they will certainly be all smiles and bad Spanish as they speak at the NCLR conference. But the Latino blogosphere and pro-migrant blogosphere wants more than sound bites, which is why the founding editors of The Sanctuary have put together a detailed questionnaire focusing on issues surrounding immigration. This was distributed to the 2008 presidential candidates over two weeks ago.

The Obama camp says a response is forthcoming and the McCain camp has stayed quiet but with election day coming closer and plenty of opportunities to play up the Latino vote until then, The Sanctuary had to put the candidates’ feet to the fire. So the questionnaire was resent, requesting a response by a specific date.

Now is the time for the presidential wannabes to step up to the plate and put some depth beyond the rhetoric. Let’s see if si se puede.

Edited to add that this is a joint effort of concerned pro-immigrant bloggers. Among them are:

Problem Chylde
Cross Left
Latina Lista
Zuky
Latino Politico
The Unapologetic Mexican
Xicano Power

ingrid%20betancourt.jpg Amid rumors of a failing marriage, Ingrid Betancourt spoke to the press about how difficult the transition from captive to freed woman has been for her:

A collapse is coming, she said.

“It’s like the roaring of the waves, I know it’s coming, and it’s getting closer,” she said softly. “So I know it’s time for me just to stop. I don’t want to be submerged by depression.”

Pay attention to how the article hints at the possibility of rape:

But she also is trying to avoid describing the details of her ordeal as an attractive woman in captivity in the jungle, a time when she was often chained, physically tortured and humiliated by armed and angry men, whose behavior, she said earlier, was “so monstrous I think they themselves were disgusted.”

Although I guess I can understand why the press would only want to hint at rape until it’s confirmed, the insinuation that female “attractiveness” inspires armed and angry men to rape is a bit problematic. There are other known instances of FARC using rape as a weapon against women and girls, would it be possible to reference those interactions rather than add the sensational and simply wrong inferences that “attractive” women inspire rape?

A-Rod Divorce Getting Uglier, Madonna in the Mix?

guy_oseary2_080703_mn.jpgBaseball star Alex Rodríguez a.k.a. A-Rod, is getting divorced, as you probably already know. Most celeb divorces are messy, but this one is proving to have even more juicy twists than we bargained for. The Material Girl is all up in the mix! Reports The Sun:

Cynthia Rodriguez, 34, who has hit the New York Yankee with 50 million divorce suit, has copies of the messages New York Yankee Alex sent the married singer.

A source said: “They were instrumental in convincing her that he was besotted. The messages could be released if things get really ugly.”

Her legal team say the association was not sexual. Madonna, 49, denies an affair.

A pal of ace Alex, 32, told how he acted like a “smitten schoolboy” as he swapped texts.

Meanwhile, C-Rod, A-Rod’s ex, is allegedly linked to Lenny Kravitz and there are rumors that all of this is just a huge publicity stunt designed to benefit Madonna’s tour and a new Guy Ritchie movie.

Rooftop Films Brings You La Corona y Alguna Tristeza in NYC

lacorona150x115.gifIf I weren’t running around with the LAMC, I’d be on a rooftop watching movies. Tonight, Rooftop Films, on the roof of el Museo del Barrio in espanish Harlem features two Latin American reels, La Corona y Alguna Tristeza.

Alguna Tristeza (Some Kind of Sadness) (Juan Alejandro Ramirez | Peru | 41:00)
Beginning with ruminations on the Peruvian soccer team’s overturned victory in the 1936 Olympics, Juan Alejandro Ramirez’ mesmerizing documentary intertwines multiple themes—personal, political, historical and anthropological—and creates a uniquely magical tapestry, shaded in the hues of his native countryside. This group of seemingly unrelated vignettes are always intensely emotional in tone: the ill-feeling after the stolen victory; a moody cab driver’s blind faith for a better future; the emptiness of a discovery that was never recognized; the alienation of an outsider in a remote Amazonian town; and the determination of a trio of waiters aboard a train that runs across the barren Southern Andean tundra. Altogether, these episodes run together like a narrated home movie for a meandering pilgrimage in pursuit of answers that ultimately unravel.

INTERMISSION

La Corona (Amanda Micheli and Isabel Vega | Colombia and the U.S.A. | 40:00)
The contestants are accused murderers, guerrillas, and thieves. The winner will be crowned Queen, but she won’t be invited on a press tour as a role model for young girls. Instead, she will be escorted back to her cell.

Nominated for an Academy Award, La Corona documents the boisterous annual beauty pageants in El Buen Pastor, a women’s prison in Colombia . Every year the prison administration allows the various cellblocks to nominate one woman to represent them in the prison-wide competition, and the ensuing spectacle is so ostentatiously festive and irresistibly colorful that it is even covered by the national media. Colombian-born filmmaker Isabel Vega read about the pageants in an article and soon teamed with long-time collaborator Amanda Micheli to capture the uniquely Colombian event. Despite difficulties working with the warden, the filmmakers succeed in capturing the spirit of the affair and glimpses of the contestants’ complex motivations. Despite their hardships, the women rally around their nominees and show intense pride and loyalty to their cellblock communities, even in defeat.

RosaClemente.jpgRadical Rican hip hop activist Rosa Clemente accepted an offer to run as Vice President along with Cynthia McKinney presidential campaign (Green Party). Rosa, who has a long history as an activist, released the following statement:

I am honored and excited to accept this invitation to run with Cynthia McKinney. Cynthia McKinney is a hero to me and many others across this country and around the world for her courage in standing up to George Bush while the Democratic Party establishment caved.

“This campaign is the opportunity the Hip-Hop generation has been working for. This is our time to address the issues affecting our communities – rising unemployment, the high cost of food and housing, a lack of quality public education and access to higher education, the prison-industrial complex, and unaccountable corporate media. These issues are not being addressed by either the Republican or Democratic nominee. “I choose to do this, not for me, but for my generation, my community and my daughter. I don’t see the Green Party as an alternative; I see it as an imperative. I trust that my Vice Presidential run will inspire all people, but especially young people of color, to recognize that we have more then two choices. Together, we can build the future we’ve been wanting.”
