Last night, as part of the Latin Alternative Music Conference excitement, BMI showcased a diverse range of Latino musical artists at Verano Alternativo, held inside S.O.B’s.
I arrived a little late, so apologies to LapDance, a new-wave indie electronic Rican band, and the Dominican, Marel.
The first band I did get to see was Origen, a rock band that leans towards the fun and jaunty pop sound. Fronted by the energetic and charismatic mujer Mirs, this is the type of music that I could totally see my older daughter getting excited about, as sort of a gateway drug into rock in español.
Hello VivirLatino! This is my first post in what I hope will be a long line of posts at VL! Thanks so much to La Mala and Jennifer for welcoming me so warmly!~La Macha

Seems like Latina swimmer and five time Olympian Dara Torres can’t catch a break with the rumor mongers. After her recent wins at the U.S. Olympic swim trials, the 41-year-old mother of one is facing down grumbling from the side lines that such a feat is “unbelievable” in the Barry Bonds sense rather than the Virgin Maria sense.
Torres is not only swimming faster than her younger self, she’s also swimming faster than her younger peers, today’s elite swimmers. She easily beat Natalie Coughlin in the 100 meters Friday, a race she has since dropped to concentrate on the 50 meters in Beijing.
Eight years ago, Torres had a staff of 10 traveling with her at all times. Eight years later, she has just as big an entourage and is a lot faster. Other elite swimmers also have highly tuned training regimens. They also are wearing the magic LZR swimsuit, which is supposed to shave off tenths-of-seconds, not turn back time.
Good thing there are some who support Torres:
Though Dara can not prove she’s clean, she is doing the very best next thing. She is one of a dozen volunteers – along with Michael Phelps and others – in a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency program, launched this spring, that collects blood and urine samples well beyond normal protocols.
I have said this before but at the risk of repetition say again: USADA can not afford for this program to fail.
Moreover, it’s not just that Dara volunteered. It’s how she volunteered.
She picked up the phone and asked to be tested.
My questions: Why are in shape 41-year-olds so unbelievable? What are all day work out schedules and a life time of sports participation supposed to do to a body?

The fun has already begun. I’m just waiting to upload some videos of last night’s BMI’s Verano Alternativo showcase at S.O.B’s, so I can share the amazing musical acts I was exposed to.
In the meantime, I plan for today.
At some point in the afternoon, I need to head to the Roosevelt Hotel, to officially register and get mi badge (with two kids- this should be fun).
Then somehow, I have to be at two places at one time!
From 6-10 there is the LAMC Music & Film Night at Central Park Summerstage
featuring Bragging Rights: Stickball Stories, a film by Sonia N. Gonzalez, and Machito: A Latin Jazz Legacy a film by Carlos Ortiz, with musical performance by CuCu Diamantes of Yerba Buena and introduction by Andres Levin.
I really want to see this because I know Sonia, the director of Bragging Rights, but I don’t think I’ll have babysitting by then.
I will have babysitting to go to the LAMC/ES Música VS GoTV Indie Showcase @ The Mercury Lounge (217 E Houston St), from
Performances by Forro in the Dark (Brazil), Zigmat (New York), Pilar Diaz (Los Angeles), Allá (Chicago), Guajiro (Puerto Rico/Miami), Don Tetto (Colombia), MySpace Latino Sponsored Band Afrobeta (Miami). Hosted by Sandra Sampayo of GoTV.
For more information on these and other LAMC related events, check out the official LAMC page.

I want this! The Media Heroes trading cards were announced at the media reform conference in Minneapolis (which I couldn’t afford to go to, but that is a different post).
The Media heroes being honored include historical figures such as legendary anti-lynching reporter Ida B. Wells, Newspaper Guild founder Heywood Broun, and Elias Boudinot, founder/editor of the first Native American newspaper, the Cherokee Phoenix. Also recognized are contemporary media movers and shakers, including intrepid PBS producer Bill Moyers, Paper Tiger TV co-founder DeeDee Halleck, Puerto Rican community activist Richie Perez, and others. Organizations or collaborations singled out for hero status include news program Democracy Now!, media watch group FAIR, and the Children’s Television Workshop, creators of Sesame Street.
Yup, they include my mentor Richie Perez (who gets all credit for the Mamita Mala name and my politics). Richie, whose media work included working against the film Fort Apache, freeing Puerto Rican political prisoners, non-partisan voter registration, and training the young Latinos leaders of tomorrow. He is my hero.
