Happy Fourth of July : To Read and to Do in NYC

La Mala is gonna take advantage of the long weekend and unplug a bit by campando. But for those of you staying in New York City or staying inside, here are a few things to keep you busy in my absence:

Since for many the fourth of July holiday is about U.S. patriotism, and to many that means military force, Colorlines has really interesting article on women of color in the military

In more of a party mood? If you’re in the Queens, NYC area head over to the Water Taxi Beach

Have a fabulous long weekend everyone!!

alberto_gonzales_480.jpgApparently someone died and made former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales boss of Latino opinion. He penned an op-ed in the L.A. Times schooling all of us with the headline: What Latinos want from their president. So Mr. Gonzales, tell me, what do we want from our president?

Any candidate who wants to attract this crucial voting bloc must address racial equality…Beyond immigration, both parties need to forge closer relationships with Latino voters. They need to connect with and make use of surrogates, as the Democrats have done with L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. They need to make more contact, an effort both parties launched last weekend, when they spoke to a conference of Latino elected and appointed officials in Washington. More important, they need to embrace policies from the Latino point of view…I have said often that Latinos share a common prayer: “Just give me a chance to succeed.” I believe that the candidate who will win Latino votes is the one who understands that desire and who will engage the issue of racial equality for Americans of all colors. It’s politically wise. More important, it is the right thing to do for our nation.

alba-bronce.jpgThe Unapologetic Mexican made us feel bed today about talking smack about Jessica Alba and her brown baby.

When it comes to her Latin roots, Jessica Alba has clearly had a change of heart.
Though she appeared to have distanced herself from her Mexican ancestry, the new mom is now desperate to keep her heritage alive through her daughter, Honor Marie, born June 7.
“Jessica wants to try to brush up on her language skills so that she can start speaking Spanish at home in front of Honor,” a friend of the 27-year-old tells OK!.
Having not spoken the language in years, the actress’ Spanish is little bit rusty, but she knows she needs to buckle down and re-learn it for her little girl.

So should we give Jessica another chance?

Is Newly Liberated Ingrid Betancourt Getting Ready for Politics Again?

Newly liberated former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt describes the Colombian military operation that freed her. But also note her politician side coming out. She throws flowers at the Colombian military saying that they will lead Colombia to peace (an army leading a country to peace?) and also how she praises the Israeli military.

Other news reports show Betancourt thanking President Alvaro Uribe (who was once her rival and whom she linked to paramilitaries during her own campaign). She also thanks Latin American Presidents like Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Ecuador’s Rafael Correa, but said that they need to respect Colombian democracy.

Later today, Betancourt will be reunited with her children.

Morning After Futbol Hangover : Liga de Quito Wins Copa Libertadores

32341_news.jpgI couldn’t fit more peeps into my tiny ass apartment last night. Colombians watching Ingrid Betancourt and everyone watching the final of the Copa Libertadores which seemed to go on and on. Technically, based squarely on goals, Brazilian team Fluminense had more goals than Liga de Quito(3-1). But with the final split in two parts, both teams actually scored the same number of goals over both games(5-5), forcing last night’s match into overtime and then into penalties.

The Ecuas in my house were yelling “chucha la verga!” as the penalties were going down. But props to Jose Cevallos, who made three saves to give Liga de Quito their first Copa Libertadores title in their history. Liga also made history by becoming the first Ecuadorean club to ever win the Copa.
