Yesterday, we wrote about the problems behind Corona’s new marketing campaign. Now it seems that Univision also has an alcohol problem. From Political Salsa who it from Latina Lista:
Nominees for the first ever annual “Tecate Premios Deportes” (Tecate Sports Awards) were announced today by Univision.”
Tecate is an alcoholic product. The awards sponsor is Heineken USA and FEMSA Cerveza. FEMSA is the largest integrated beverage company in Latin America.

6 out of 10 Latinos in California can’t read VivirLatino, or any other blog because they do not have internet access. A recent statewide survey conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California indicates that the digital divide is growing and is based on ethnicity, demographics and income.
Latinos and low-income residents are less likely to use computers and surf the Web than non-Hispanic whites and African Americans, according to the report. The study, to be released today, found that 40 percent of Latinos have Internet access, and less than half own computers, compared with 86 percent of whites, 84 percent of Asians and 79 percent of African Americans.

Salvador Allende — the democratically elected president of Chile ultimately overthrown by dictator Augusto Pinochet and his compinches — would have been 100 years old today. In Chile, his birthday was celebrated and the validity of his message still resonates today:
Outside of the Palacio de Gobierno, the place where Allende committed suicide after the military coup of 1973, hundreds of sympathizers , politicians and human rights groups commemorated the birthday of one of the biggest symbols of socialism in Latin America and the world.“He is more relevant than ever, in the new, old and future generations,” said senator and daughter of the ex-leader, Isabel Allende.
“In every corner of the world we need to fight for greater equality, for the unsatisfied needs, the inequality, discrimination…there the legacy of president Allende will always be present,” she said.
Indeed. Have a look at Allende’s farewell speech to the people of Chile. His sacrifice was not in vain. As Allende said “I will always be next to you. At least my memory will be that of a man of dignity who was loyal to his country.”

In my hometown of Houston, George Bush Senior has an international airport named after him (the original name — “Intercontinental” was just fine) but in my adopted hometown of San Francisco, my fellow Friscans have come up with a particular honor for his son, Dubya. What better a place to represent the administration of George W. Bush than a sewage treatment center:
A group called the Presidential Memorial Commission has reportedly picked up more than enough signatures to put the ballot initiative to the San Francisco public in the November election. If the measure passes, it would rename the city’s Oceanside Treatment Plant as the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.
That’s not exactly a presidential library, but sponsors of the ballot measure say it’s a fitting tribute to a president who made a big mess.
It sounds like a joke but don’t mess with San Franciscans. We vote on all kinds of “crazy” measures such as a citywide gun ban and yep, they pass (though thanks to a Supreme Court decision today, that unfortunately might not last…so much for sovereignty!). Personally, I think that sewage plant is way too pretty to bear the Bush name.

Earlier this week, we told you about how activist hip hoppers Rebel Diaz were given a beat down by the NYPD when two of it’s members were brave and responsible enough to monitor the police in the Bronx as they harassed street vendors trying to make a living. The NYPD doesn’t like it when their “community relation” activities are spread far and wide through independent and activist media. So yesterday morning, the NYPD stormed the apartment of Rebel Diaz member G1.
PERSONAL STATEMENT FROM G1 OF REBEL DIAZ:
Early this morning, at around 2am, I, Gonzalo Venegas aka G1 of Rebel
Diaz, was in my home in Harlem, working on my computer in the living
room, when several police officers burst into my unlocked apartment,
with guns drawn, ordering us to get down and put our hands up.I was in the apartment with my roommate DW who was in the adjacent bedroom, and my friend MM, who slept on the couch nearby.
Both were awakened by the home invasion and were witnesses to the events occurred.
The uniformed police officers did not knock, nor announce themselves, nor
verbally identify themselves before or during their entry into my
apartment. They pointed their guns at us the whole time as they verbally barraged MM and I with questions as to who we were and what we were doing there.
As I lay on the ground with my hands up, I replied loudly and clearly that I lived there, and that everyone in the house was supposed to be there.
They replied incredulously, repeatedly yelling their questions as to who we were, with threats as to what would happen to us if I was found to be lying.
After various other taunts and threats, including accusing us of harboring a fugitive criminal suspect, they departed just as quickly as they had arrived, down a side stairway adjacent to my apartment.
They did not stay to search me or my roommates, or the apartment for any signs of the supposed fugitive they were looking for.
After a few seconds of disbelief and shock, I decided to follow the officers outside in order to fully understand what had just happened, and to document their identity.
One police van sped off as I came out of the side door of my building.
The remaining police squad car was pealing off when I ran into the middle of the street to flag it down.
They stopped the car, as I respectfully asked for their name and badge numbers.
Both police officers allowed me to walk closer to them, as I verbally noted their name and badge numbers.
The officers quickly got back into their squad car, provided no explanation for the home invasion, and sped off.
I was left in a state of shock and terror, as I frantically asked some of my neighbors outside if they knew of why the police had entered my building- and specifically my apartment–without justification.
I received no conclusive answers from the residents outside.
As of 10:30pm EST on Tuesday June 24, 2008,I have not received any official explanation for the events occurred, neither from the police precinct nor my building manager or owner, despite numerous calls and
requests for an explanation. Both the 25th and 23rd NYPD precinct, which patrol my block, have denied that the officers involved are from their command.
The questions as to why several armed police officers mysteriously and violently invaded my home without any clear legal justification remain unanswered.
One is left only to think that the occurrences of this morning are not a coincidence of mistaken identity, but a direct response by the NYPD to an incident of police brutality I was involved in last week in the South Bronx.
Until we have a clear understanding of the causes and the people behind this morning’s home invasion, Rebel Diaz will engage in limited communication outside of our legal representation.
We are not looking for the next NYPD scare tactic to turn into a tragedy.

against G1 and Rodstarz of Rebel Diaz last week, and the pending case
them, please visit www.rebeldiaz.com

A California judge blocked a lawsuit that sought to enlist Los Angeles police officers in weeding out undocumented immigrants. The lawsuit was filed by unnamed police officers, allegedly afraid to speak out about what they called a revolving door, where undocumented residents are routinely arrested and not deported.
Superior Court Judge Rolf M. Treu on Wednesday rejected arguments that the city’s policy — under which most suspects are not asked about their immigration status — conflicted with federal and state law.”
We already know that big cities, like L.A. and NYC engage in racial profiling practices. Hopefully this law will set a precedent that won’t allow LAPD to stop people based on them looking like “an illegal”, which has been racialized to mean looking Latino.

Corona beer just launched a new ad campaign targeting the Latino pride that most of us have, not just Mexicans (the market they have traditionally targeted)The Spanish-language TV campaign that keystones the new multimedia effort for the country’s number one imported beer is themed “Nuestro Orgullo. Nuestra Cerveza” (”Our Beer. Our Pride.”), and showcases Latinos celebrating their culture and successful lifestyles. Is celebrating with a cold one the best image of Latino success we can get? I have nothing against beer (in fact just writing this makes me want one….ok have one and it’s not a Corona), I just think there are better ways to promote Latino success (and go against stereotypes).
