algore_narrowweb__300x310%2C0.jpgFor all of you who were hoping that Mr. Lockbox himself, Al Gore, might emerge as a surprise candidate before November, I’m sorry to say that you’ll have to keep dreaming. Gore sent this message out today via the DNC mailing list:

Make a donation Tonight, I will step on stage in Detroit, Michigan to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama. From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States.

Over the next four years, we are going to face many difficult challenges — including bringing our troops home from Iraq, fixing our economy, and solving the climate crisis. Barack Obama is clearly the candidate best able to solve these problems and bring change to America.

I’m hoping that this, in addition to Hillary’s backing, is an indication of a bit more unity within the party. What’s for sure is that Gore will be an omnipresent figure in the life of whomever gets elected, pushing for his policies to help slow climate change — something that was impossible to do with this administration.

Ay Papi, My Father’s Day with Victor Manuelle

41lF9uLxXjL._SL500_SL150_.jpgDid you get the papi on your life a tie? The papi in my lift spent the warm NYC afternoon with the familia at Central Park’s Summerstage listening to salsa estrella Victor Manuelle.

Manuelle, whose performance was touted as his first U.S. appearance to promote his new CD, Soy, had the crowd packed with Latinos from all over the world, although the lone star of the Puerto Rican flag against the red, white, and blue, was obviously the dominant one. In fact, given the gear of some of the attendees, it would be easy for someone to confuse the Victor Manuelle concert with a mini Rican day parade.

The crowd was full of fathers and families of all ages, who wanted nothing more to hear Victor Manuelle and dance to his music. So much so, that the M.C.’s of the concert, from the NYC radio station la Kalle, were booed numerous times.
Once Victor came out, it was obvious why.

chavez_uribe.jpgVenezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, political enemies, may be meeting soon, especially since Chavez’s call to the FARC to release all their hostages and end their fight.

“I want to reiterate our thanks to President Hugo Chavez for his recent comments that help Colombia win a definite peace. I believe they were positive comments,” Uribe said at a community town hall meeting.
Uribe said he would meet soon with Chavez as the two governments work to repair ties…A Colombian government source said the meeting would likely take place in Venezuela before July 15 though details were still being hammered out.

In the Heights Earns 4 TONY Awards

16tony.xlarge6.jpgA week ago, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the mind behind the Broadway musical In The Heights, was nervous as hell wondering what the TONY Awards would think of him. Turns out that they love him and his musical love song to Washington Heights. In the Heights won four TONY Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score for the Theater, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations. While the musical didn’t win 13 awards to go with it’s 13 nominations, it won some of the most important ones.

Felicidades to Lin-Manuel and the entire cast and crew (now if anyone would like to throw me some tickets so I could see the show…..)

El Che is Remembered at Home

16 Jun 2008

r.jpegSaturday, June 14th is Flag Day in the U.S., but in Argentina, Cuba, and many other places in Latin America, June 14th was celebrated as the 80th birthday of Ernesto “el Che” Guevara. In Rosario, Argentina, a bronze statue of the legendary revolutionary was unveiled.

“I believe in the revolution, that’s why I love Che,” said Monica Nielson, 49, wearing a soldier’s beret with a single star like that worn by Guevara in a photo that turned him into a 20th Century icon.

Spanish language news shows in the United States, like Al Punto with Jorge Ramos, focused on conspiracy theories on who killed el Che. While a CIA backed operative in the Bolivian jungle is credited for the Guevara’s murder, some, including those that fought beside him, point the finger at the Fidel Catro led Cuban government.

Tim Russert, Meet the Press Moderator, Passes

14russert_190.jpgLast Friday afternoon, after suffering a sudden heart attack at the Washington bureau of NBC News, Tim Russert, the 58 year old moderator of Meet the Press, passed away.

Tim Russert was part of my Sunday routine, along with bagels and sections of the New York Times scattered across my bed. Russert, who was also the Washington bureau chief and a senior vice president of NBC News, I always remember him asking tough questions of all those who sat with him and he was respected for that. His opinion, style, and perspective will be missed and cannot be replaced.
