In a country known for its fine leather, an awareness campaign around saying no to the purchase and use of animal skins may or may not go over well in Argentina. But some Argentine celebs are uniting their voices in a campaign to show exactly what becomes of the animal that is killed for your latest fashion statement. The poster above, featuring actress, Marcela Kloosterboer is just one of the shocking images that the non-profit organization AnimaNaturalis has posted all around Buenos Aires.

The Democratic candidate often called out for his disconnect with the Latino community is now (pretty much) the DNC’s nominee. And as such, he knows he got to get down with the peeps to try to win a leg-up on John McCain, considered by many Latinos as “sympathetic” to the immigration issue. Not one to stand in the old man’s shadow, Barack Obama will be meeting his match at the National Council of La Raza’s (NCLR) annual conference in San Diego next month:
Both senators are expected to address immigration and other issues pertinent to Latino voters, NCLR President Janet Murguía said during a visit to San Diego promoting the convention. Obama’s plans were announced yesterday; McCain had agreed earlier to address the convention. The fact that both candidates will attend “speaks to a number of things, not only to the importance of the Latino vote, but also to the importance of this region and this state,” Murguía said during a news conference.
This is an event to watch: high-profile, with both candidates attending. I really hope that Obama doesn’t end up showing himself as even more conservative on immigration than McCain at this event.

The second TimesTalks event last night was a conversation with Colombian born, Queens bred actor, writer, director and producer John Leguizamo. This event packed the Times Center theatre with a diverse crowd. This TimesTalks was also moderated by Robin Pogrebin, whom Leguizamo called “baby” on one occasion as she asked tough questions from a stack of papers on her lap. He swaggered onstage to thunderous applause.
From the beginning of the conversation, it was clear how passionate Leguizamo is about his work and the reasons he started writing and acting. His writing, according to him, came from a place of anger, and was a response to seeing the same roles for Latino males: super, gangster, gardener, or janitor. He even brought up that the World War II documentary by Ken Burns excluded Latinos until Latinos organized against him.

Last night I had the pleasure of going behind the curtain with the talento artistico of the theatre. TimesTalks (as in the New York Times) along with Teatro Stage Fest sponsored a panel discussion with Graciela Daniele, Eugenio Derbez, Bianca Marroquin, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The talk was moderated by a dry Robin Pogrebin, a cultural reporter for the New York Times.
The talk was introduced by the director of Teatro Stage Fest, Susana Tubert, who said that the artists in the panel were “not Latino artist, rather artists who happened to be Latino” (a line that doesn’t sit well with me- as if one has nothing to do with the other or as if being Latino just happens to be with no wider implication).
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the mind behind the words and music to the Tony nominated In the Heights, garnered the most applause, while the mostly white theater going crowd seemed unfamiliar with Eugenio Derbez, who ironically enough had a few Mexican farandula cameras anxiously waiting outside.
