While gay couples can’t legally get married in New York State, those couples who marry in other states and countries, specifically Canada, will have their marriage recognized inside the Empire State.
Gov. David A. Paterson has directed all state agencies to begin to revise their policies and regulations to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions, like Massachusetts, California and Canada.
In a directive issued on May 14, the governor’s legal counsel, David Nocenti, instructed the agencies that gay couples married elsewhere “should be afforded the same recognition as any other legally performed union.”

If there’s one thing I’ve always loved about Eva Longoria is the fact that fame hasn’t gone to her head. In interviews, she seems to still be the same humble San Antonio girl she has always been. Further proof of that is that she’s gone back to work at her former job: flipping burgers at Wendy’s:
Longoria Parker worked at Wendy’s from 1991 to 1994, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported in its online edition. While the current star of Wisteria Lane dished up fast food, her husband, Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs, was preparing for Game 4 of the Lakers-Spurs matchup in San Antonio.
OK, it was for charity — benefitting Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program — but cool nonetheless.

28 May 2008Last week I wrote about a call for bids to build three new immigrant detention facilities. For those worried about the demand to build more glorified jails and the money it will cost to build them, maybe this will make you feel better, the centers are supposed to be nice!
“The two resident living units should be located such that the front doors of the units open onto the quad/green space. The educational and indoor recreational program buildings also face onto the quad/green space and are easily accessible to the resident living units…. The site should provide numerous open/green space areas for both large and small group recreational and educational program opportunities to take place. Fenced-in play areas for toddlers are located directly adjacent to the living units, allowing for parent supervision. Soccer, volleyball and basketball areas should be nearby but separated from the living units. The main quad shall also provide small group gathering areas for the residents to gather or for staff to utilize for different program services.” (pg.
The single building plan contains the same basic components as the campus plan, but in a single building, with green space around the building. This plan is “more conducive to an urban site.” This building is organized as follows:“A centralized interior circulation spine acts as the organizer to which the components of the [facility] are attached. The administrative functions are located near the front entry to the site. The appearance of the administration building should be non-institutional, warm, welcoming and incorporate such features as a gabled or sloped roof for a more residential style/appeal. The resident living units are located along the main circulation spine and surround a common outdoor activity/program service area. All of the resident services functions are also located along the main circulation spine, each having a designated entry or “store front” appearance, similar to a mall concept. The location of these functions will allow for easy access by residents. The services located along the main spine include recreational and educational programs, resident services, visitation, health services, library and dining…. The site provides numerous open/green space areas for both large and small group recreational and educational program opportunities to take place. Fenced in play areas for toddlers are located directly adjacent to the living units, allowing for parent supervision, while the soccer, volleyball and basketball areas are nearby, but separate from the living units.” (pg. 9)
As nice as they may be, it’s important to know that they are still detention facilities, meaning that the people cannot leave!

While Lou Dobbs might not want to admit it, a recent article in Forbes magazine says that Mexicans are among the hardest working populations in the world. Mexico ranks number 7 in the top 10 most hardworking countries, but that obviously doesn’t mean that it is getting rich from all that labor. In fact, it ranks as the country that works the hardest but makes less money.
The U.S. ranked number 9 on the list, while the number one and two countries were South Korea and Greece, respectively.

If the rumors are true that Ugly Betty, the ABC television show, may become a Broadway musical, I hope the musical numbers are better than the one above.
Michael Urie — who plays camp assistant Marc St. James — told a British radio station that this fantastic idea is turning into a reality.
“They do want to do an “Ugly Betty” musical, a full-on Broadway musical, but it’s all hush-hush. I think it would be great, and they should use the cast from the show. I think we would all do it, although we maybe don’t dance and sing as well as professional singers and dancers. I think it would be fun for us to do it for a while, and then they could get real people in. They definitely want to do an episode that is a musical one, but then they want to do a full stage show. I think it’s a great idea. It would definitely work.”

Spanish news media is reporting that the FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia) was planning to set off a bomb in Madrid, Spain, but the organization’s number 2 man, Raul Reyes, died before the plan was carried out:
Colombian authorities revealed on Tuesday that an email had been found on the computer of fallen rebel leader Raul Reyes, in which the top FARC leader, Alfonso Cano, suggested that they “should plan a project” to carry out an attack in Madrid. The email has intelligence organizations worried, because according to the initial analysis, FARC as planning to carry out attacks against prominent Colombian personalities in the Spanish capital. “I propose that you create a project that will get the comrades ready for the attack in Madrid,” says the message that Cano sent to the head of the FARC.
According to Spain’s 20 Minutos, in another email found on the computer, Cano states that the death of 11 politicians from the Colombian state of Valle del Cauca last June was “a mistake”. Apparently the FARC guards mistook them for a guerrilla from the ELN (Ejército de Liberación Nacional).

According to Lossip, Mexicana estrella Thalia is gonna strip down como dios la trajo al mundo for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Other Latino stars who have bared all for animales include Patricia Manterola who posed as a caged tiger calling for boycotts against circuses, Eve Mendes who would rather go naked than wear fur, and Constance Marie, who didn’t strip for PETA but urged spaying & neutering in print and television ads. Rockeros Jaguares lent their voices for a pro-vegetarianism radio spot and tv ads. Television star María Celeste has done a number of radio spots for PETA.

27 May 2008Last weeks Maegan asked if some controversial posters about Obama were offensive or if they made you think. Now I’ve got something from you that isn’t up for interpretation. Fox News does it again:
I’m against censorship, but this is disgusting and this person should go down. If you want to help achieve that, there’s a petition.

In an NPR interview with Washington Post reporters, Dana Priest and Amy Goldstein, responsible for a four part series on the treatment of foreign detainees inside ICE detention facilities, the pair describe how medical care for those detained is decided based on manuals that tell staff what they cannot do rather on what they can do for ill inmates. But the star of the interview was a woman who called in to describe what she saw and heard when visiting her detained French fiancé. For example, she talks reveals that women inside were denied feminine hygiene products and were given rations of toilet paper and allowed to bleed on themselves.
Listen to the interview here.
