Guantanamo Bay Iguanas Protected. Detainees, Not So Much

Ruby%201.JPGSomething is seriously wrong when animals inside Guantanamo Bay are protected but the people detained inside Guantanamo Bay are not.

U.S. law protects endangered iguanas on the naval base, but the Supreme Court is struggling to determine whether it also applies to the 305 men imprisoned there.

What escapes the analysis of most is that the majority of those detained inside of Gitmo are people of color, specifically Arab men, Middle Eastern men. The message is clear, the rights of iguanas are other animals are valued more than the lives of detained men of color.

A Sad Statistic : Army Suicides Up

cemetary.jpgJust as the number of casualties of both civilians and soldiers in Iraq continues to rise, the military reached another sad milestone today. Last year saw an increase in the number of army suicides, up to 108.

The 108 confirmed deaths in 2007 among active duty soldiers and National Guard and Reserve troops that had been activated was lower than previously feared. Preliminary figures released in January showed as many as 121 troops might have killed themselves, but a number of the deaths were still being investigated then and have since been attributed to other causes, the officials said.
Suicides have been rising during the five-year-old war in Iraq and nearly seven years of war in Afghanistan.
The 108 deaths last year followed 102 in 2006, 85 in 2005 and 67 in 2004.

There are panels, including a panel on blogging and the Latin alternative scene that I will definitely be at.

You can go too! Log onto http://www.latinalternative.com/ and register to catch what promises to be some of the best music and music talk this verano.

29 May 2008

DavidPaterson_Flags.jpgWhile gay couples can’t legally get married in New York State, those couples who marry in other states and countries, specifically Canada, will have their marriage recognized inside the Empire State.

Gov. David A. Paterson has directed all state agencies to begin to revise their policies and regulations to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions, like Massachusetts, California and Canada.
In a directive issued on May 14, the governor’s legal counsel, David Nocenti, instructed the agencies that gay couples married elsewhere “should be afforded the same recognition as any other legally performed union.”
