I’ve been wanting to see the Broadway musical, In The Heights since it opened, but now with 13, count ‘em 13 TONY Award nominations, I want to see it even more.
“In the Heights,” a rap, hip-hop and salsa flavored musical about Latino families in Washington Heights, led the Tony nominations, which were announced on Tuesday morning, with 13 nods, including two for Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show’s 28-year-old creator and star.
The winners will be announced at the 62nd annual Tony awards ceremony on June 15 at Radio City Music Hall with Whoopi Goldberg hosting.

I haven’t included any children’s books in my Latino book suggestions until today. Me Llamo Gabriela: My Name is Gabriela by Monica Brown and illustrated by John Parra, is a beautiful book about the Chilean Nobel Prize winning poeta Gabriela Mistral. Winner of the 2006 International Latino Book Award, the bilingual English and Spanish book is a mini biography of Mistral. It tells, through lyrical writing and bright illustrations, the story of Mistral’s childhood in Chile, her becoming a teacher,a poet, and a traveler. It is a story about dreams coming true and recognizing the beauty of things all around us. The pictures are interesting enough to capture the interest of a toddler and the story is interesting enough for older school children as well and is a great way to introduce them to Latin American writers.
You can purchase Me Llamo Gabriela here.

Spanish president Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has warned Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez against disrespecting his government during the Latin American-European Summit to be held in Lima this week:
…he reiterated to Hugo Chavez that he must respect Spanish institutions, after he once again criticized the Spanish king.
On his weekly radio address, Aló Presidente, Hugo Chávez said that the Spanish king “thinks he’s superior” to Latin Americans but that “when the King goes to the bathroom, he lets out the same thing the rest of us do.” Quite the colorful illustration.
President Zapatero says that if Chavez does go to the Summit this week, “it’s quite probable that I will have a talk with him”. Zapatero is apparently attempting to avoid another embarrassing incident like this one.
Perhaps the German government should be more concerned. Apparently Chavez has been comparing president Angela Merkel to Hitler and plans to confront her at the Summit.

Las Abuelas de la Plaza de Mayo, an Argentine activist group fighting for justice in the disappearance cases of hundreds of Argentine citizens — many children and pregnant women — during the country’s “Dirty War” have been nominated for a 2008 Nobel Peace Prize
…for their fight to give restore the identity of some 500 children stolen during the last dictatorship, in an act before congress.
Estella Carlotto, president of the organization, in a speech about the candidacy, said: “We are regular women among the thousands of Argentine women who do not back down in desperate situations…Each grandchild we get back is like a Nobel Prize.”
The last Nobel Peace Prize for Argentina was in 1980, for activist Adolfo Pérez Esquivel.
