evaluna.jpgI fell in love with Isabel Allende the summer before I went to Chile and I still lover her (although I enjoy her earlier works more than her later books). In Eva Luna, Allende weaved her story magic through the character of Eve, who is a storyteller herself. The storytelling is an act of escape, self-protection, and even revolution against the struggles Eva finds herself in, in an unnamed South American nation.

Just a beautiful book.

ice.jpgImmigration and Customs Enforcement, better known as ICE, has upped it’s scare tactics and now is resorting to terrorizing families by waiting outside elementary schools. Yesterday afternoon ICE agents parked outside Stonehurst Elementary School in Oakland, California. The agents did not attempt to enter the school but rather lay in wait, like hunters. No arrests have been reported.

There have been other cases of ICE targeting parents through their children. Remember the case of the girls who were deported for cutting school?

This is completely unacceptable. As a parent with a child in public school, I should not be afraid of taking my child to school or picking her up because of ICE agents menacingly parked outside. Personally I am trying to find out what the NYC Department of Education policy is regarding ICE. I urge people to do the same.

07obama07_600.jpgThere were no big surprises coming out of yesterday’s Democratic primaries, held in North Carolina and Indiana. Barack Obama won North Carolina easily (by 14 percentage points), and Hillary Clinton just barely won Indiana. Many have attributed Hillary’s slight victory in Indiana to older voters who have been loyal to her, and Obama gaining votes from lower class white voters who have traditionally voted Clinton.

Obama’s clear victory in North Carolina, besides raising his delegate and popular vote count, also proved that the Rev. Wright drama hasn’t impacted his campaign as many thought it would.
