julieta_unplugged.pngOne of the acts I’m most excited to see and hear at the LAMC is Julieta Venegas. The accordion and guitar wielding Mexicana is releasing her Unplugged CD and DVD on June 17th. From the press release:

With A Combination Of Four New Songs And A Collection Of Beloved Favorites Recorded In An Intimate Acoustic Atmosphere, Julieta Venegas: MTV Unplugged Finds The GRAMMY-Winning Songwriter Joined By Such Respected Guests As Gustavo Santaolalla, Marisa Monte, La Mala Rodriguez, Natalia Lafourcade & More

RachelRay.jpgRachel Ray annoys me. Her “simple”, so-called 20 minute recipes and happy happy cooking piss off my struggling to put a Latino meal on the table while blogging and chasing two kids. But I wouldn’t call Rachel Ray a terrorist or that she supports terrorists because she’s wearing an “Arab looking” scarf while selling Dunkin Donuts iced coffee drinks. But conservatives, among them Michelle “I suffer from self-hate ” Malkin, think that the scarf Ms. Ray wore during a DD’s ad:

looked too much like a keffiyeh, what Malkin describes as “the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad.

. And Dunkin Donuts said: ok we’ll pull the ad. Stupid move Dunkin Donuts.

Tamayo Paintings Sold for Millions

capt.3d91ef4fe9244b0797591c4eb71d0705.latin_american_art_nyr103.jpgMexican master painter Rufino Tamayo is known worldwide for his amazing work, though not necessarily as famous in the U.S. as other Mexican artists who have had a lot marketing dollars behind them. But appreciation for Tamayo’s work has been shown this week in New York, at least in terms of dollars:

The painting “The Watermelon Eater” sold today for a final price of 3.6 million dollars, with commission included, during a Latin American art auction in Sotheby’s New York headquarters.

But that was a meager amount in comparison to the Tamayo piece “Trovador”, which sold on Wednesday for some 7.2 million dollars. That sale has established a new world sales record for the auction of a piece of Latin American art.

Latino Book Month : Weekend Release Pick Latinos in Lotusland

11:08 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Books| Los Angeles · Comments Off

30 May 2008

securedownload.jpeg>Latino Books Month is almost done, and this weekend if you’re in the Los Angeles area, you should check out the new release, Latinos in Lotusland: An Anthology of Contemporary Southern California Literature.

The stories and novel excerpts sandwiched in between “Kid Zopilote” and the excerpt from Chicano bring us to modern-day Latino denizens of Los Angeles and the city’s surrounding communities. And what a complex and diverse group of people we observe: young and old, gay and straight, rich and poor, the newly arrived and the well established. There’s a Cuban American screenwriter trying to pitch the “real” story behind the Bay of Pigs fiasco. We see a Mexican woman struggling with barrio life who believes she’s seen a miracle. There are youths trying to avoid gang life and others embracing it. And we’re introduced to aggressive journalists, cement pourers, disaffected lovers, drunken folklórico dancers, successful curanderos, teenage slackers, aging artists, wrestling saints, aimless druggies, people made of paper, college students, and even a private detective hot on the heels of a presumed-dead gonzo writer.

I haven’t read the book but I plan on it, it sounds like a great and interesting contribution to the Latino lit community. It features writers such as Salvador Plascencia, John Rechy, Sandra Ramos O’Briant, Luis J. Rodríguez.

DNCC-LogoHorizColorFINAL.jpgIt is going to be quite a summer. Last night I got word that yours truely on behalf of VivirLatino will be headed in August to the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado as a credentialed blogger. I am excited for this opportunity. Not that getting here has been controversy free.

When bloggers were chosen for the state blogger pool, many amazing, grassroots, independent bloggers of color were given the shaft. Looking at the list of bloggers credentialed, there are some bloggers there that I know and love. We’ll see how this all pans out. Stay tuned for more information.

With the Puerto Rican Democrat primary Sunday, Barack Obama and his followers are pulling out all the stops to play to the Latino community (which is way more than Rican). This means speaking Spanish like in Obama’s latest commercial. I think he did pretty well. What do you think?Appealing to the Rican/Latino vote means music and famous people.

Guantanamo Bay Iguanas Protected. Detainees, Not So Much

4:14 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba| Justice| Politics · Comments Off

29 May 2008

Ruby%201.JPGSomething is seriously wrong when animals inside Guantanamo Bay are protected but the people detained inside Guantanamo Bay are not.

U.S. law protects endangered iguanas on the naval base, but the Supreme Court is struggling to determine whether it also applies to the 305 men imprisoned there.

What escapes the analysis of most is that the majority of those detained inside of Gitmo are people of color, specifically Arab men, Middle Eastern men. The message is clear, the rights of iguanas are other animals are valued more than the lives of detained men of color.

A Sad Statistic : Army Suicides Up

2:14 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Health| military · Comments Off

29 May 2008

cemetary.jpgJust as the number of casualties of both civilians and soldiers in Iraq continues to rise, the military reached another sad milestone today. Last year saw an increase in the number of army suicides, up to 108.

The 108 confirmed deaths in 2007 among active duty soldiers and National Guard and Reserve troops that had been activated was lower than previously feared. Preliminary figures released in January showed as many as 121 troops might have killed themselves, but a number of the deaths were still being investigated then and have since been attributed to other causes, the officials said.
Suicides have been rising during the five-year-old war in Iraq and nearly seven years of war in Afghanistan.
The 108 deaths last year followed 102 in 2006, 85 in 2005 and 67 in 2004.
