24 Apr 2008Futbol legend Diego Maradona reacted to being closed in on my journalists as he left a Buenos Aires courthouse by kicking and cursing. La Mano de Dios was leaving an arbitration hearing with his former manager. What really set Maradona off was the treatment of his ex-wife Claudia Villafane.
No se, for all his controversies, if I were being surrounded in a crowd like that I’d be kicking and cursing too. Pero, why doesn’t he have bodyguards or something?

23 Apr 2008Monna Bell, a popular Chilean singer who achieved success in Mexico and Spain in the 1970s and was one of Mexican pop star Juan Gabriel’s muses, died on Monday in Tijuana of a stroke.
Her friend, actress Carmen Salinas, announced the news:
“I’m very upset. Monna was a great friend, a great woman, and she had an unmatchable voice. Her family informed me today that she passed away on Monday.”
Bell arrived in Mexico in the 1970s after achieving success in Spain. Spanish director Pedro Almodovar included her song “Estaba Escrito” in his 1980s classic “Pepi, Luci, Bom Y Otras Chicas Del Monton”.

While the facts about immigrant detention are important to note, I take issue with the idea that justice and human rights is an “American” value.
First, as I have noted before, it bothers me how the word “American” has been appropriated to mean the United States and exclude Latin America, including Central and South America. This to me is a framing of America that seeks to silence a large portion of the “American” population (the “voiceless” in the MLK quote).

Hillary Clinton has quite a few Latino celebs in her corner. Some of the Latinos that have thrown their star power behind the former first lady include Eva Longoria, Ugly Betty (well America Ferrara)has been quoted as saying:
“I truly believe that Hillary Clinton can turn this country around. I’m confident that she will be a champion for young women and men across the country,”
Even some Latino bloggers are supporting Hillary, like Perez Hilton.
And who is VivirLatino endorsing?
We’re nonpartisan (for now)

Ruben Salazar (1928-1970) is one of five American journalists being honored with postage stamps. According to the US Postal Service, these journalists were chosen because they risked (and in Salazar’s case, lost) their lives covering some of the most important events in the 20th century.
Los Angeles bloggers at LA Eastside and Intersections have discussed Salazar’s important legacy as both a journalist and in the Chicano Movement.
The LA Times have a wealth of coverage on Salazar, including some of the ground-breaking columns he penned in the 1960s. From Ed Fuentes’ View From A Loft:
On August 29, 1970, at age 42, the Los Angeles Times and KMEX [a Spanish-language television station] reporter was shot in the head and killed by a tear gas canister fired by a deputy sheriff during the Chicano Moratorium March protesting the Vietnam War. Outside the Silver Dollar Cafe, where Salazar was struck, was Cal State Northridge Professor Raul Ruiz and his camera.
At the time of his murder, Salazar was called a “militant” by Time Magazine. Now, he’s honored by activists and journalists alike.
