With Federal fraud charges hanging over his head, Puerto Rican Governor Anibal Acevedo Vila announced yesterday at a meeting held by his party, the Partido Popular Democratico (PPD), that he was running for reelection. Seems like he has the support of those running the Pava (as his party is popularly called) as well. More than 5,000 delegates ratified a resolution vowing to support him as their candidate despite his legal problems.

28 Apr 2008The following video and story via / Blabbeando horrified me. It shows Colombian high schoolers returning to school after a court decided that the two teenage girls were wrongly expelled for being lesbians. When the girls went back to register, they were greeted with other students screaming, “We don’t want them.” One student in the video clip said that she supported the principal’s original decision because now everyone thinks that the school is full of lesbians. The principal maintains that they were expelled for disciplinary reasons not because they were lesbians and that her autonomy was violated.
Who is really getting their rights violated here? See the video after the jump.

On Saturday, the Latino U.S. President that wasn’t, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, met with U.S. Latin American enemy #2 (Cuba is still #1), Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Richardson was lending his support in hostage negotiations with the FARC, especially trying to secure the release of 3 U.S. hostages and of course, Ingrid Betancourt.
“I’ve had a good meeting with President Chavez … (he) has told me that he is willing to help in this situation,” Gov. Bill Richardson told reporters after the meeting.
“Many times in a conflict like this we forget the human side, that human beings are being held hostage.”

When a Constitutional Court of Chile blocked a government-sponsored program that distributed emergency contraceptives to women as young as 14 free of charge, thousands of people protested in the capital of Santiago.
Now, hundreds are planning to renounce their membership in the Roman Catholic Church on April 29, since the court’s decision is linked to the Vatican’s position that the morning after pill is akin to at best birth control, at worst, abortion.

About an hour ago, the three New York City Police officers charged with an array of charges for the November 25th, 2006 shooting death of 23 year old groom Sean Bell, were cleared of all charges. Unarmed, Sean Bell died in a hail of 50 some bullets outside a strip club where he was having his bachelor party.
Officers Michael Oliver, 36, and Gescard Isnora, 29, stood trial for manslaughter while Officer Marc Cooper, 40, was charged only with reckless endangerment. Two other shooters weren’t charged. Oliver squeezed off 31 shots; Isnora fired 11 rounds; and Cooper shot four times.

I ride the NYC subway system nearly everyday with children. So why do I not feel safer with the announcement that the New York City Police Department will be patrolling the major subway stations with Mp5 submachine guns, rifles, body armor and bomb-sniffing dogs? The program is called Operation Torch and this new anti-terror effort is thanks to a 50 percent increase in a Homeland Security grant. The program’s complete cost? $151 million.
I feel safer already.

Before the May 1st march for immigrants in NYC, the film Beyond Borders is showing.
the Tribeca Film Institute will hold an exclusive one-day screening of the new feature documentary Beyond Borders – The Debate Over Human Migration on May 1st at 1PM at the AMC 19th St. East theatres, 890 Broadway at 19th Street. Beyond Borders tackles the immigration debate head-on with those supportive of immigration reform in the US and those very much against it. Including theorists such as Noam Chomsky, and anti-immigration activists, the Minute Men Project. This timely documentary addresses some of American voters’ primary concerns in this election; immigrants, their rights when crossing the border, and how it will affect US citizens.
I’m going to try and make it to the screening with my kids before the march. You should as well if you’re going to be in the NYC area.

Nanny, nanny boo boo. The fact that I speak English and Spanish to my children is actually boosting their English language skills, according to one article.
“Speaking two languages opens up a whole new world to children,” says Laurie Weaver, Ed.D., Associate Professor of Bilingual and Multicultural Studies at University of Houston-Clear Lake. “Not only will they be better prepared to understand others, they will also understand themselves and their own language better.”
Weaver is one of many parents who believes in the value of their children speaking two languages. Research has shown that kids who are routinely exposed to a second language from an early age, consistently score higher on English tests as an older child. Apparently learning a second language not only makes you bilingual, it also increases English proficiency.
