A Spanish court decided not to extradite Isabel Peron, wanted in Argentina to face charges of violating human rights.
The National Court on Monday ruled that the accusations against Peron, 77, could not be termed crimes against humanity and that there was insufficient evidence of her involvement.
The court ruled, therefore, that she could not be extradited.
Peron is wanted by a judge for questioning over the disappearance of 24-year-old Hector Aldo Fagetti Gallego and the arrest of a minor, Jorge Valentin Beron, in 1976.
Another judge wants to question her as part of a probe into the Anti-communist Alliance, a death squad blamed for killing at least 1,500 government opponents from 1973-1976.

Some of our readers praised local anti-immigrant measures, like the one Prince William County, Virgina passed, but to used a cliched phrase, what happens when those chickens come home to roost. More specifically, what happens when the impact of these policies impact you, the non-immigrant, the non-Latino, where it hurts, your wallet?
Hundreds of foreign-born families have pulled their children from Prince William County public schools and enrolled them in nearby Fairfax County, Arlington County and Alexandria since the start of the school year, imposing a new financial burden on those inner suburbs in a time of lean budgets.

With Federal fraud charges hanging over his head, Puerto Rican Governor Anibal Acevedo Vila announced yesterday at a meeting held by his party, the Partido Popular Democratico (PPD), that he was running for reelection. Seems like he has the support of those running the Pava (as his party is popularly called) as well. More than 5,000 delegates ratified a resolution vowing to support him as their candidate despite his legal problems.

28 Apr 2008The following video and story via / Blabbeando horrified me. It shows Colombian high schoolers returning to school after a court decided that the two teenage girls were wrongly expelled for being lesbians. When the girls went back to register, they were greeted with other students screaming, “We don’t want them.” One student in the video clip said that she supported the principal’s original decision because now everyone thinks that the school is full of lesbians. The principal maintains that they were expelled for disciplinary reasons not because they were lesbians and that her autonomy was violated.
Who is really getting their rights violated here? See the video after the jump.

On Saturday, the Latino U.S. President that wasn’t, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, met with U.S. Latin American enemy #2 (Cuba is still #1), Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Richardson was lending his support in hostage negotiations with the FARC, especially trying to secure the release of 3 U.S. hostages and of course, Ingrid Betancourt.
“I’ve had a good meeting with President Chavez … (he) has told me that he is willing to help in this situation,” Gov. Bill Richardson told reporters after the meeting.
“Many times in a conflict like this we forget the human side, that human beings are being held hostage.”
