Points of Unity for May Day Marches

23 Apr 2008The National Immigrant Solidarity Network has put out its Points of Unity for the May Day marches. They are as follows:1.
No to anti-immigrant legislation, and the criminalization of the immigrant communities.2. No to militarization of the border.
3. No to the immigrant detention and deportation.
4. No to the guest worker program.
5. No to employer sanction and “no match” letters.
6. Yes to a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
7. Yes to speedy family reunification.
8. Yes to civil rights and humane immigration law.
9. Yes to labor rights and living wages for all workers.
10. Yes to the education and LGBT immigrant legislation.
Penelope, Bardem and Woody Off to Cannes

Woody Allen’s new movie, starring Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Scarlett Johannsen and strangely titled “Vicky Cristina Barcelona“ has been announced as part of the official selection for this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The head of the Festival, Thierry Frémaux, called the movie “a Spanish film that I hope you will watch with much pleasure.” He also noted that “Hollywood didn’t make movies about the Costa Brava in the 1950s, but perhaps Allen might launch a genre about Americans who go to Spain to sunbathe.” Perhaps something got lost in translation, but that seems like a weird comment.
I’m excited about this film, and am anxious to see how Allen handles the bilingual thing, and even more curious to see whether English-speaking audiences are receptive to a movie partly shot in Spanish. Others are buzzing about a sex scene involving both Penelope and Scarlett.

Chilean Singer Monna Bell, Dead at 70

23 Apr 2008Monna Bell, a popular Chilean singer who achieved success in Mexico and Spain in the 1970s and was one of Mexican pop star Juan Gabriel’s muses, died on Monday in Tijuana of a stroke.
Her friend, actress Carmen Salinas, announced the news:
“I’m very upset. Monna was a great friend, a great woman, and she had an unmatchable voice. Her family informed me today that she passed away on Monday.”
Bell arrived in Mexico in the 1970s after achieving success in Spain. Spanish director Pedro Almodovar included her song “Estaba Escrito” in his 1980s classic “Pepi, Luci, Bom Y Otras Chicas Del Monton”.

Is Immigrant Justice American?

While the facts about immigrant detention are important to note, I take issue with the idea that justice and human rights is an “American” value.
First, as I have noted before, it bothers me how the word “American” has been appropriated to mean the United States and exclude Latin America, including Central and South America. This to me is a framing of America that seeks to silence a large portion of the “American” population (the “voiceless” in the MLK quote).
Hillary Wins Penn But Obama Still Leads

So this morning I woke up and realized it wasn’t a dream. Hillary Clinton won the Pennsylvania Democratic primary by about 10 points with 99% of the precincts reporting.
The BBC is giving Hillary a 9 point lead, taking away that double digit victory.
This means that she gets the majority of Dem delegates from that state but not enough to beat out Obama’s delegate lead or his popular vote lead.
According to CNN’s latest count, Obama leads in the delegate count — 1,694 to 1,556.
This means that this seemingly never ending race goes on, onto the May 6 contests in North Carolina and Indiana.
Latino Celebs for Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton has quite a few Latino celebs in her corner. Some of the Latinos that have thrown their star power behind the former first lady include Eva Longoria, Ugly Betty (well America Ferrara)has been quoted as saying:
“I truly believe that Hillary Clinton can turn this country around. I’m confident that she will be a champion for young women and men across the country,”
Even some Latino bloggers are supporting Hillary, like Perez Hilton.
And who is VivirLatino endorsing?
