Puerto Rican Department of Justice Closes Filiberto Ojeda Rios Case
12:29 H | Topics: Justice - Puerto Rico
Yesterday, The Puerto Rican Department of Justice reported that it was closing its investigation of federal agents in the shooting death of Machetero leader Filiberto Ojeda Rios, saying that it could not obtain enough evidence to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the Secretary of Justice, Roberto Sánchez Ramos, said that he believed that the agent who shot Ojeda lied when he reported seeing Ojeda inside the house through a window. Federal regulations prohibit agents shooting through closed doors and windows and as such considered charging the agents with criminally negligent homicide. PRDOJ pointed out that the shot that reached Ojeda passed through the refrigerator door before hitting him.
The Rican Department of Justice called on congressional representatives and the current PR Resident Commissioner Luis Fortuno to open a legislative investigation of the incident to clarify exactly what occurred.
I wouldn't hold my breath for a legal resolution of the issue.
