Yesterday, The Puerto Rican Department of Justice reported that it was closing its investigation of federal agents in the shooting death of Machetero leader Filiberto Ojeda Rios, saying that it could not obtain enough evidence to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the Secretary of Justice, Roberto Sánchez Ramos, said that he believed that the agent who shot Ojeda lied when he reported seeing Ojeda inside the house through a window. Federal regulations prohibit agents shooting through closed doors and windows and as such considered charging the agents with criminally negligent homicide. PRDOJ pointed out that the shot that reached Ojeda passed through the refrigerator door before hitting him.
The Rican Department of Justice called on congressional representatives and the current PR Resident Commissioner Luis Fortuno to open a legislative investigation of the incident to clarify exactly what occurred.
I wouldn’t hold my breath for a legal resolution of the issue.

10 Apr 2008Penobscot Indians are leading the opposition to a congressional resolution to label Venezuela as a terrorist country.
Penobscot leaders say that House Resolution 1049 threatens to stop free heating oil that Venezuela has supplied to hundreds of American Indians and low-income people for the last three years. James Sappier, former Penobscot chief, said it was not true that the Venezuela government supports the Colombian guerrilla group, FARC, designated by the U.S. as a terrorist group. Sappier and others are urging tribes to contact their representatives to urge them to vote against the resolution.

I’ve been accused of teaching my children radical positions but someone should be asking what the parents of 13 year old Melanie Bowers, of Athens, Texas, are teaching her. Well actually what is society teaching her? After all, after hearing of the alleged attack on the girl that 21 Latino students were involved in after seeing a class assigned sign that read: “If you love our nation, stop illegal immigration” the internet and right wing pundits were all up in arms. Sending all citizen Latinos back to Mexico (as if that’s where we all come from). Most recommended putting all the 21 children on suspension and or jail immediately and the deporting of many of them although all were citizens.
Compare this to the reaction when a person of color is attacked.
Let’s wait and see what the investigation shows is the most common response.
No double standard here, move it along. Except…..

I’m not a big South Park fan, but once in a while, I’ll watch to catch a glimpse of my favorite character, Towelie. (And no, he’s not my favorite because I share his, um, habits.)
Last night’s episode, “Eek, A Penis!” makes me wonder if South Park has Chicanos from East LA on the writing staff. Half the episode was a parody of Stand and Deliver (1988). The film, based on a true story, chronicles the efforts of Jaime Escalante, an advanced placement calculus teacher at Garfield High School in East LA. Escalante, an immigrant from Bolivia, struggles to motivate and inspire his Chicano students to pass the AP exam in calculus while they deal with all sorts of issues. Many of the students pass the exam, but then are accused of cheating and have to re-take the exam.
The South Park version has Cartman playing the Escalante role (played by Edward James Olmos) as Mr. Carmantez.
Meanwhile, Cartman, taking Kyle’s warning about the dangers of inner-city students, disguises himself as a Mexican man (”Mr. Cartmanez”) and teaches his students how white people are able to succeed better than they do: by cheating. He then teaches his class numerous cheating techniques, explaining that as long as they succeed, no one will judge them. He teaches them to memorize test answers, use cameras, and, in the case of a pregnant girl, getting an abortion (which he explains is “cheating nature itself”). When the kids do amazingly well, they are then challenged to take the hardest, most secure standardized test in the state, and pass. The class honors “Mr. Cartmanez” for teaching them “The White People Method,” and he is universally praised. (source)
The name of the school Cartman teaches at, Jim Davis High School, also parodies the school.
I’ve yet to find a clip online for the episode, but I’m sure you can find something on YouTube or Hulu in a day or two. In the mean time, if you haven’t seen Stand and Deliver watch it!
