18 Mar 2008

17tufino.190.jpgOver the weekend in Puerto Rico, flags were flying at half-staff by order of the governor, Aníbal Acevedo-Vilá. The island was mourning one of it’s own hijos, painter and printmaker Rafael Tufiño, who died last Thursday in San Juan at age 85 from lung cancer.

Tufiño, known as el pintor del pueblo, was born in Brooklyn, but lived in Viejo San Juan. His mark in the NY Rican community is huge as demonstrated by being a founder of Taller Boricua, a workshop and art collective started in East Harlem in 1970, and was also influential in the establishment of El Museo del Barrio.

Venezuela Wins Suit Against Exxon

9:19 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · business|Money|Venezuela · Comments Off

18 Mar 2008

r.jpegScore for Venezuela in it’s ongoing battle with U.S. oil giant Exxon. Earlier today a British court ruled that a $12 billion freeze on Venezuelan assets awarded to U.S. oil major Exxon Mobil should be lifted. The freeze has been won in January by Exxon, who wanted to secure available cash if it won arbitration over an oil field which was lost in President Hugo Chavez’s nationalization drive. Exxon is expected to appeal.

Venezuela’s Ambassador to Britain, who arrived shortly after the ruling, answered with just one word when he heard the result: “Excellento”.Excellento? Um Reuters, check your translations.

New NY States Gov’s First Agenda Item : Affairs!

2008_03_17t155915_335x450_us_newyork_spitzer_paterson.jpgYesterday, New York State swore in it’s 55th governor, David Paterson. He is the first African-American governor in the Empire State and the first legally blind governor in the country. He has a strong reputation as a progressive and is stepping in after Eliot Spitzer resigned following being caught by the Feds paying for sex. All this just in time to pass a New York State budget.

So what’s the first big agenda item Paterson is going to tackle? Education? The economy? Nope, his own affair.

Rapid Response ICE Raid Network Hotline for NY/NJ Launched

9:57 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration|New Jersey|New York · Comments Off

17 Mar 2008

ice.jpgIf Immigration and Naturalization (ICE) show up at your door, do you know what to do? Do you know what your rights are? Most people don’t, especially in the current climate of fear, which is why NJ the May 1 Coalition and the New Jersey Civil Rights Defense Committee have launched a 24-hour free number (1-800-308-0878) covering New York and New Jersey that will provide immediate, contact with Spanish-speaking volunteers in the event of a raid.

“Most of the ICE raids on homes and workplace are fishing expeditions—ICE does not know who has documents and who does not,” explains Eric Lerner, a member of the NJ May 1 Coalition. “Immigrants are detained and deported mainly as a result of information that they are frightened into providing the agents. If immigrants call the hotline as soon as they hear that knock on the door, the volunteers will explain to them their rights so that they don’t inadvertently give out information that leads to detention.” Experience with Rapid Response Networks in other cities has shown that even immigrants who are aware of their rights can panic when confronted with armed ICE agents and forget those rights. The hotline provides a reassuring, knowledgeable individual who can remind the caller of their rights and encourage them to use them.

The Paz Sin Fronteras concert, held yesterday on the Colombia-Venezuela border was a success
by all accounts. As you can see, all the participants, including organizer Juanes, fellow Colombian Carlos Vives, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bose, and Juan Luis Guerra, all entered wearing white (save a few accessories). And all participating artists performed separately and together- showing through action, that there can be unity with differences.

Santo Who Day? Zizek: Urban Beats Club Tonight at S.O.B’s

7:57 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Argentina|Music|New York City · Comments Off

17 Mar 2008

zizek1.jpgLooking for a way to avoid the drunken throngs and puddles of vomit that seem to overrun NYC on St. Patrick’s Day (don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about). Take refuge tonight inside S.O.B’s (204 Varick Street, NYC), where the weekly Buenos Aires, Argentina party Zizek: Urban Beats Club takes over.

Zizek is about emerging Hip Hop, Dancehall, Cumbia, and Reggaetón sounds and their respective variations: Grime, Crunk, Bastard Pop and Mashups. The idea is to give these styles, ideas and rhythms an Argentine touch, with the aim of putting Buenos Aires on the map of the global music scene. The star of Zizek has been Cumbia, a Latin American sound born from the fusion of old and new worlds in Colombia that has been long looked down on as dance music for the lower classes in Argentina. Its distinctly syncretic roots promote robust adaptability and cumbia is being transformed by avant-garde musicians and producers from the USA all the way down to Argentina.

Also at the party will be the NYC alternative Latino party maestros, Nacotheque, with DJs, Amylu and Marcelo Cunning.

Just added : This party is the official after party for the Mala Rodriguez show, also tonight at Irving Plaze. S.O.B’s is offering free admission to anybody who comes with their La Mala ticket stub! That means two shows for one people!

Seriously someone come and watch my kids.
$10 Advance/$12 Day of; Available on Ticketmaster and the S.O.B.’s Box Office, 212-243-4940. Doors open 8pm.

chopsockychooks.jpgI generally think poorly of most of the cartoons on t.v. these days and with a 10 year old, I’m pretty familiar with the different channels and their lineups. So when I saw the following advert for a new toon on cartoon network- well even my 10 year old recognized that this cartoon was problematic to say the least.
