Monday Morning Reading : Naptime is the New Happy Hour

8:00 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Books · Comments Off

Naptime.jpgAs a mami to a toddler, I know how precious naptime is (how do you think I get any blogging done). I’m not typically a fan of funny parenting books (ok of any parenting books) and I admit that when I opened Naptime is the New Happy Hour: and Other Ways Toddlers Turn Your Life Upside Down by Stefanie Wilder-Taylor, I was skeptical about how much I would enjoy the book.

The book is divided like many books for new mamis, dealing with some of the most pressing issues like television, tantrums, sickness, and food issues. But these issues aren’t handled in your usual way. If you’re a hardcore attachment mom, you won’t appreciate the jabs at co-sleeping. If you’re a hard core organic mom, you won’t appreciate the jabs at freak outs about kids eating processed food. But if you’re like most moms, you’ll appreciate the witty and real look at how a little bit of tv won’t kill your kids but will give you a chance to take a crap in peace and how playdates are usually fun for your kids but not so much for you.

I can’t help it if I think Rican babies are beautiful. But I think Max looks way cuter than Emme (or maybe it’s the angle).

I intend to do a post on overbearing Latina mamis but overbearing Latina mamis with millions to spare brings things to a whole ‘nother level.

How many nurses do the babies have? Two. Plus a butler.

Ok so who do you think the babies look like? Papi or mami?

21endorse2.190.jpgThe Latino president that almost was, Bill Richardson, has thrown his support behind Barack Obama. The Governor of New Mexico will make an official announcement today at a campaign event in Oregon.

Richardson had been courted aggressively by the Hillary Clinton camp, even using Bill Clinton, Richardson’s former boss when he was energy secretary. I can hear the Clinton disappointment now.

Bill Clinton : Bill, amigo. I thought we had a deal? We watched the Superbowl together!
Bill Richardson: Bill, you act like we were watching futbol futbol. It was just American football.

Ok that conversation didn’t really happen but listen to what Richardson did say in a statement about the endorsement…

I haven’t had my coffee yet for my brain to be functioning, but you don’t need that much brain power to interpret this video coming at us via / Proinmigrant.

And yeah, don’t forget, the war in Iraq too! That’s the fault of the undocumented too!

080318_Pokemon_dl-vertical.jpgIt’s been quite a few years since I’ve lived in Chile, but thanks to my Chilean partner, my half Chilean children, and DirectTV, I keep up with Chilean culture which is why I was kind of pissed off by Newsweek‘s one dimensional interpretation of urban youth identity in Chile summed up by the Pokemones vs. the Pelolais.

According to the Newsweek article, Pokemones are all about looks, sex, and materialism and nothing of substance. They are, according to the article the new urban tribe taking advantage of a good Chilean economy with no political inclination at all.

Absent from the article, and corrected by one commenter, is the fact that the majority of Pokemones (so named, correct me if I’m wrong) not for the cartoon characters per se but because like the Pokemon characters, they are many. There is power in being part of a group and every group has an ideological enemy. In the case of the Pokemones, that enemy would be the pelolais.

Obama and Sam Cooke : A Change is Gonna Come

Am I getting caught up in the Obama wave? Maybe. You gotta admit all these speeches and videos can be pretty damn inspiring (even if I question the ability of electoral politics to change anything)

glnt_supermojado_1903.jpgLucha libre was a huge part of my childhood. Sundays with papi, my grandfather, were spent watching the antics of the colorful characters but who knew it could get so political? Entering the ring is Super Mojado.

Super Mojado introduced himself yesterday as a hero for Southern California’s immigrant community. A local wrestling promoter said that Super Mojado will star in a charity bout this weekend with proceeds going to illegal immigrants who were detained in a recent raid.

Univision PAC Supporting Anti-Immigrant Congressman

2346758034_8d4c9b99ab_m-1.jpgLet’s be real, for all it’s talk of being the Spanish language television voice of Latinos in the U.S., Univision doesn’t have the most progressive record. Have you seen the makeup of the novela protagonistas? And despite all the immigration questions on the CNN/Univision debates, I can’t say I’m surprised that Univision’s political action committee contributed $1,000 on January 30, 2008 to the Friends of Cliff Stearns committee. And who is Cliff Sterns?

He was a co-sponsor of H.R. 4437 (The Border Protection, Anti-terrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005), which was popularly known as the Sensenbrenner Bill. He is also a co-sponsor of the pending immigration enforcement bill H.R. 4088 formally entitled the Secure America Through Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act of 2007. Stearns’ stance on immigration is spelled out on his campaign website, which includes the statement “Let me assure you that I will oppose any bill that contains amnesty provisions.”

It is the speech that everyone is talking/blogging about. U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama, was supposed to be distancing himself from comments made by the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., but instead he presented an incredibly nuanced assessment of race in this country, how race and its legacy impacts the way people access health care and education.

If you’re not a video person, you can read the speech here.
