I rarely use yellow taxi cabs. I can’t find any in my hood and when I’m in the city, they don’t want to drive me to my hood. A study of 1,000 taxicab rides in one city, New Haven, Conn., found that black cab drivers were tipped less than white cab drivers and that black and Latino passengers tip less than white passengers (I am looking at you, oh partner of mine who doesn’t tip anyone well). Even black passengers tipped black drivers less. Other studies have shown the same trend in other tip dominated industries, like waiting tables.
But the trend maybe more than just racial, it’s historic according to some.
The practice of tipping emerged in the early 20th century to provide a “consideration” from then primarily white customers to those serving them in menial jobs, who tended to be Black workers. “For some, the practice of tipping was intimately connected to the perceived inferiority of African Americans,”

Trying to show she’s more than just a pretty face, Rosanna Queirolo, won a seat on the Ecuadorian National Assembly on a platform promising to protect the environment and to provide a bridge to the Ecuadorian immigrant community in the United States. Once comfy in her seat of power however, she showed her true colors in positions about rape, abortion and the GLTB community.
For those non-Spanish dominant peeps, translation after the jump.

27 Mar 2008A hot Colombian I know sent me this video the other day, informing me about the Earth Hour movement around the world.
I had my doubts about one hour of no electricity meaning anything, but if anyone could get me to try anything once, and in the name of the world to boot, it was this hot Colombian.
Later the same day, NY State Senator Jose Serrano’s resolution that passed the State Senate. The resolution requests that Governor David Paterson adopt 8 p.m., Saturday, March 29, 2008 as Earth Hour in an effort to encourage energy conservation.

So the blogosphere is all abuzz about Vogue magazine’s choice of cover imagery when they finally put a black man on their cover. The picture of Basketball star LeBron James and Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen (who is, of German descent), is being labeled racist because it evokes the stereotype of the black male ravaging the white female. Some even say LeBron’s posture and pose evokes King Kong (which is actually the same stereotype).
The cover shot was taken by superstar photog Annie Leibovitz. Vogue did have other, less incendiary images for it’s cover. Like the one after the jump.
