In the Voice of Immigrant Women : They Wanted to Take Away My Baby

1:03 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration · Comments Off

The National Immigrant Justice Center is posting interviews with soe of their detained clients who have fought for their freedom for years be released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
It is always important to hear the experiences of these women and men, in their own voices, not filtered through media or statics. Rawness has it’s value.
Imagine being told to go and die in your own country, which means, yes be killed in your country or the fear of having your baby taken away.

Photo%2011.jpgAs a blogger, I’m always connected. There’s wifi, checking my email on my phone, texting, twittering, reading the blogs of others, and on and on and on. But does that make me sick?

Alcohol, drugs, food, sex, and even shopping are all candidates for medical treatment and are recognized as genuine mental disorders, so what about the Internet? Internet addiction -defined as “excessive gaming, sexual pre-occupations, and email/text messaging” – is becoming so common that at least one psychiatrist says it merits inclusion in psychiatry’s official handbook of mental illness, the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.”

Ok well I’m not a big gamer and I don’t have sexual pre-occupations (trust me) so maybe I’m safe.

bookclub.jpgGetting a book published as a Latina is hard enough. Promoting that book so that it is a success, is a whole other can of gandules. That’s why author Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez is going beyond the book club route to promote her new book Dirty Girls on Top ,the sequel to her bestselling debut, The Dirty Girls Social Club. She’s asking old fans and new readers to host parties in support of the book. From the books website:

Our goal is to have 250 parties across the nation, the week of July 8, 2008; we hope most will take place the weekend of July 11 to 13.

I think this is actually a great idea and a great way to bring excitement back into the lit world.

If you want to host a party, you can sign up here.
