21endorse2.190.jpgThe Latino president that almost was, Bill Richardson, has thrown his support behind Barack Obama. The Governor of New Mexico will make an official announcement today at a campaign event in Oregon.

Richardson had been courted aggressively by the Hillary Clinton camp, even using Bill Clinton, Richardson’s former boss when he was energy secretary. I can hear the Clinton disappointment now.

Bill Clinton : Bill, amigo. I thought we had a deal? We watched the Superbowl together!
Bill Richardson: Bill, you act like we were watching futbol futbol. It was just American football.

Ok that conversation didn’t really happen but listen to what Richardson did say in a statement about the endorsement…

“I believe he is the kind of once-in-a-lifetime leader that can bring our nation together and restore America’s moral leadership in the world,” Mr. Richardson said in the statement. “As a presidential candidate, I know full well Sen. Obama’s unique moral ability to inspire the American people to confront our urgent challenges at home and abroad in a spirit of bipartisanship and reconciliation.”

Richardson is one of those super-delegates, who gets to vote if none of the Democratic candidates have a delegate lead.

Why did he wait until now? Licking his wounds, or just waiting for the probable winner to emerge?
