080318_Pokemon_dl-vertical.jpgIt’s been quite a few years since I’ve lived in Chile, but thanks to my Chilean partner, my half Chilean children, and DirectTV, I keep up with Chilean culture which is why I was kind of pissed off by Newsweek’s one dimensional interpretation of urban youth identity in Chile summed up by the Pokemones vs. the Pelolais.

According to the Newsweek article, Pokemones are all about looks, sex, and materialism and nothing of substance. They are, according to the article the new urban tribe taking advantage of a good Chilean economy with no political inclination at all.

Absent from the article, and corrected by one commenter, is the fact that the majority of Pokemones (so named, correct me if I’m wrong) not for the cartoon characters per se but because like the Pokemon characters, they are many. There is power in being part of a group and every group has an ideological enemy. In the case of the Pokemones, that enemy would be the pelolais.

Am I getting caught up in the Obama wave? Maybe. You gotta admit all these speeches and videos can be pretty damn inspiring (even if I question the ability of electoral politics to change anything)

glnt_supermojado_1903.jpgLucha libre was a huge part of my childhood. Sundays with papi, my grandfather, were spent watching the antics of the colorful characters but who knew it could get so political? Entering the ring is Super Mojado.

Super Mojado introduced himself yesterday as a hero for Southern California’s immigrant community. A local wrestling promoter said that Super Mojado will star in a charity bout this weekend with proceeds going to illegal immigrants who were detained in a recent raid.

2346758034_8d4c9b99ab_m-1.jpgLet’s be real, for all it’s talk of being the Spanish language television voice of Latinos in the U.S., Univision doesn’t have the most progressive record. Have you seen the makeup of the novela protagonistas? And despite all the immigration questions on the CNN/Univision debates, I can’t say I’m surprised that Univision’s political action committee contributed $1,000 on January 30, 2008 to the Friends of Cliff Stearns committee. And who is Cliff Sterns?

He was a co-sponsor of H.R. 4437 (The Border Protection, Anti-terrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005), which was popularly known as the Sensenbrenner Bill. He is also a co-sponsor of the pending immigration enforcement bill H.R. 4088 formally entitled the Secure America Through Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act of 2007. Stearns’ stance on immigration is spelled out on his campaign website, which includes the statement “Let me assure you that I will oppose any bill that contains amnesty provisions.”
