New NY States Gov's First Agenda Item : Affairs!

08:06 H | Topics: New York - Politics

2008_03_17t155915_335x450_us_newyork_spitzer_paterson.jpgYesterday, New York State swore in it's 55th governor, David Paterson. He is the first African-American governor in the Empire State and the first legally blind governor in the country. He has a strong reputation as a progressive and is stepping in after Eliot Spitzer resigned following being caught by the Feds paying for sex. All this just in time to pass a New York State budget.

So what's the first big agenda item Paterson is going to tackle? Education? The economy? Nope, his own affair.

Color me disappointed. Just hours after being sworn in Albany, Paterson revealed, through the NY Daily News, that both he and his wife had affairs a few years back when they were having difficulties in their marriage.

"This was a marriage that appeared to be going sour at one point," Paterson told the Daily News. "But I went to counseling and we decided we wanted to make it work. Michelle is well aware of what went on."
Paterson told the newspaper that he maintained a relationship with another woman from 1999 until 2001. He and his wife, Michelle, eventually sought counseling and repaired their relationship. The couple did not go into details.
Paterson and the other woman sometimes stayed at a Days Inn on Manhattan's Upper West Side, the governor said, adding that his Albany staff sometimes stayed there as well when they were in the city. Paterson said he did not use government or campaign funds to pay for the romantic encounters.
Eww the Day's Inn??? But seriously, this is a policy issue why? Are there not some serious issues we need to be dealing with as a state besides with who and where the governor is sleeping?

The sad thing is that today this is the talk- not Paterson's progressive record, not where he stands on the budget and even sadder, people are too easily sucked in because apparently there are no other serious issues we care to think too hard about.
