A Cartoon No Child Should Be Seeing : Chop Socky Chooks

chopsockychooks.jpgI generally think poorly of most of the cartoons on t.v. these days and with a 10 year old, I’m pretty familiar with the different channels and their lineups. So when I saw the following advert for a new toon on cartoon network- well even my 10 year old recognized that this cartoon was problematic to say the least.

Does anyone else think the characters are a little too racially stereotypical? My kid did!

Angry Asian Man points out something that should have been obvious to me, but I guess I was so astounded by the imagery, that I missed the word/sound connection.

In Australia and other parts of the world, “chook” is apparently slang for chicken, which is what I guess these weird-looking characters are supposed to be. Forgive me for thinking that “chook” just sounds too much like a racial slur.

Yeah, another reason why kids shouldn’t be watching television.

I just saw the show like an hour ago. I loved it! It was so cute! The Chicken named Chuckie Chan reminded my mom and I of my boyfriend Angel who is Colombian. Truthfully I saw no racism in it.I did like that they used chickens as the main characters because Angel and I have a cute little group called Chicken Huggers Anonymous, where we try to raise awareness about chickens.
