Venezuela has long been criticized by the U.S. government for not doing enough against the illegal drug trade within it’s borders. Its’ not clear if the recent anti-drug campaign within Venezuela is a reaction to this criticism or part of a longer strategy.
Venezuelan authorities have launched a new operation against the illegal drugs trade by bombing secret airstrips in remote parts of the country.
The first runway to be destroyed was 15km (nine miles) from the Colombian border in the state of Apure.

What better way to start your Monday than by thinking about Friday. This coming Friday, April 4th, S.O.B.’s presents 3 de la Habana in their first-ever live NYC performance. Having just received political asylum in the U.S. in late 2007, this is the innovative trio’s first ever appearance in NYC and only their third U.S. performance, although the band has made numerous acclaimed appearances throughout Europe, Mexico and Latin America. 3 de la Habana play a mix of their own compositions and outside material in an eclectic fusion of traditional and edgy rhythms that range from traditional timba to alternative to reggaeton. Check them out for yourself after the jump.

The number of clubs and restaurants in my hood is astounding. Little holes in the wall where many in my immigrant community seek refuge in after a day/night of hard work. So the implications of recent ICE activities in Dallas, Texas are huge if you take a wider perspective.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with, the Dallas County District Attorney, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Dallas Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas in Dallas raided bars, clubs, restaurants, supermarkets and pool halls in an attempt to crack down on security companies that hire undocumented immigrants as security guards.
A total of 49 undocumented immigrants who worked as security guards were reported arrested.
My kids love this song and I like the video.
Have a wonderful weekend mi gente!

Next week Paul Simon’s Broadway musical, The Capeman, will get a chance to win audiences again, something it failed to do during it’s first run nearly 10 years ago. Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is proud to produce Songs from The Capeman (April 1 through April 6, 2008), a special concert staging of Paul Simon’s 1998 Broadway show, The Capeman. The show’s lauded music, in performances at the BAM Harvey Theater (651 Fulton St), will feature Paul Simon, Oscar Hernández and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Claudette Sierra, Obie Bermudez, Ray De La Paz, Little Anthony and the Imperials and other guests.

The governor of Puerto Rico and 12 members of his party, el Partido Popular Democrata, were indicted yesterday on charges of conspiracy to violate U.S. federal campaign laws and giving false testimony to the FBI, among others. If found guilty, Anibal Acevedo Vila could face up to 20 years in prison. The charges follow a two year investigation led by the U.S. Federal Justice Department. Acevedo Vila will not be arrested, but rather will be given the opportunity to turn himself in. He is expected to do so sometime this morning. Others names in the indictments weren’t so lucky and were led away in handcuffs.

I rarely use yellow taxi cabs. I can’t find any in my hood and when I’m in the city, they don’t want to drive me to my hood. A study of 1,000 taxicab rides in one city, New Haven, Conn., found that black cab drivers were tipped less than white cab drivers and that black and Latino passengers tip less than white passengers (I am looking at you, oh partner of mine who doesn’t tip anyone well). Even black passengers tipped black drivers less. Other studies have shown the same trend in other tip dominated industries, like waiting tables.
But the trend maybe more than just racial, it’s historic according to some.
The practice of tipping emerged in the early 20th century to provide a “consideration” from then primarily white customers to those serving them in menial jobs, who tended to be Black workers. “For some, the practice of tipping was intimately connected to the perceived inferiority of African Americans,”

Trying to show she’s more than just a pretty face, Rosanna Queirolo, won a seat on the Ecuadorian National Assembly on a platform promising to protect the environment and to provide a bridge to the Ecuadorian immigrant community in the United States. Once comfy in her seat of power however, she showed her true colors in positions about rape, abortion and the GLTB community.
For those non-Spanish dominant peeps, translation after the jump.
