20 Feb 2008Just because I’m Puerto Rican doesn’t mean I don’t like some Dominican flavor (forget the rumors of Ricans vs. Dominicans). I know from experience that one of the hottest Dominican Independence Day celebrations outside D.R. is in NYC, more specifically in S.O.B’s. This February 27 promises to be no different with a concert featuring merenguero Shino Aguakate, Frandy Sax and DJ Lobo. And where there’s good Dominican music there’s got to be good Dominican food. S.O.B’s is serving a full Dominican menu, completito con kipes, chicharron de pollo y pasteles de platanos (damn save me a plate!)This is the only celebration in NYC on February 27th, the actual date of Dominican Independence.
Ticket Info: First 100 Ladies free, $10 Ladies/ $12 Gentlemen; Available on Ticketmaster and the S.O.B.’s Box Office, 212-243-4940. Doors open 7pm.
Special Thanks to Alex Damashek at S.O.B’s for providing pics and info. Now someone quick : offer to watch my kids so I can go!

Over 600 undocumented immigrant couples — some of the planning to enter the U.S. and others returning from the U.S. — were married in a mass ceremony at the border between Tijuana, Baja California and San Diego on Valentine’s Day.
As a live band blasted out sugary Mexican love songs in the border city of Tijuana, a short walk from the busy San Ysidro crossing into California, a judge simultaneously married a crowd of couples whose ages ranged from 16 to 65.More than three-quarters were migrants returning from, or trying to get into, the United States.
“Isn’t she gorgeous? I love her!” said Inocencio Felix of his new wife Angelica Perez, 36, dressed in a flouncy white wedding gown. Perez was deported by U.S. immigration officials two weeks ago from the state of Oregon, where the couple met.
Reuters reports that some couples made the dangerous decision of returning to Mexico just to participate in the ceremony.

He ain’t dead yet- so the Miami fiestas may be subdued, but there will be fiestas none the less I’m sure as ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro finally admitted what most already knew, that he will not return to lead the country as president or commander-in-chief. This ends a 49 year run as leader of the Caribbean island nation, a position he took in a historic and controversial armed revolution.
To my dear compatriots, who gave me the immense honor in recent days of electing me a member of parliament … I communicate to you that I will not aspire to or accept — I repeat not aspire to or accept — the positions of President of Council of State and Commander in Chief,” Castro said in the statement published on the Web site of the Communist Party’s Granma newspaper.

18 Feb 2008This news is admittedly over a week old, but I couldn’t let this slip by without drawing you attention to it. An anonymous source sent the BBC a tape of an encounter between Cuban IT students and the head of the country’s parliament, Ricardo Alarcon and what is seen might be shocking for some. Students ask some very tough questions. The video is in Spanish, but if you don’t speak it, I’ll try to summarize after the jump.

They say third time is a charm, but this wasn’t the case for the Denver-based consul of Guatemala, that renewed passports and embassy identifications for its citizens living and working in Utah, Colorado and Nevada. Anti-immigration groups protested the event because the Guatemalan nationals didn’t have to prove their status in the U.S. (why would they- this was for Guatemalan documents!). Protest groups said if the Guatemalans were legal immigrants, they wouldn’t need secondary forms of identification.

While you were off partying this weekend, some people in Europe decided to declare their independence (don’t you feel like a slacker now?). Yesterday, the province of Kosovo declared independence from Serbia prompting some sightings of people waving the flag of Kosovo in NYC streets yesterday, confusing people (What flag is that? Is there a parade today?). The declaration of independence is the latest chapter in a long history of events in the former Yugoslavia that include a civil war between ethnicities in the region.

It’s February 15th…do you know where your Valentine is? Did you spend the holiday alone, cursing it as a Hallmark consumerist excuse to spend money, or were you instead pining away because (say in whiny voice) “everybody’s got somebody except me…”?
A new all-Latino dating site called QuieroLatino might be the solution to your singledom. The site officially launched yesterday, on el dia de los enamorados and we’ve heard there’s a lot of buzz on QuieroLatino already.

Earlier this week, we reported on the latest Hugo Chavez threat. By the next day, Venezuela’s state oil company said that it has stopped selling crude to Exxon Mobil Corp. This was a direct response to A US court freezing $12bn of State Venezuelan assets until the verdict of an international tribunal. Venezuela is saying that Exxon never invested that much money and that their actual assets value at $1.2bn.
Exxon gets (or got) about 5% of its crude oil from Venezuela.
