Thanks to Hugo Chavez (don’t you hate when he does something right?), four Colombian hostages held by the FARC for 6 years are set to be released. According to news reports this morning, Venezuelan helicopters are set to go deep into the Colombian jungle to get Senator Jorge Eduardo Gechem, Congresswoman Gloria Polanco de Losada, Lawmakers Orlando Beltran Cuellar and Luis Eladio Perez. One of the hostages is said to be in grave health. Colombia is said to be cooperating, by stopping military maneuvers in the release area.

26 Feb 2008Hillary Clinton is really gearing up for the March 4th primaries in Texas, and is priming the pump for the Tejano vote. My fellow Texans will appreciate the person she’s picked to “introduce” her Latino campaign song in Spanish for the Texas region: none other than local personality Johnny Canales. Check it out:

26 Feb 2008The Mexican Senate just passed the much talked about “Anti-tobacco Law”, which would make many parts of the country smoke free, and the consequences for breaking it are no joke:
The General Law for Tobacco Control will prohibit smoking in closed public spaces and violations will be punished with up to 36 hours of jail time.In addition, fines up to the equivalent of 100 to 10,000 minimum wage days [a common way of calculating fines in Mexico] and the temporary or permanent closing of businesses violating the law will be applied. For repeat offenders, the fine can go up to 1 million pesos.
The new law establishes “100% smoke free zones” in public spaces, workplaces both public and private and universities.
Mexico’s Milenio reports that once the official bulletin is released by the government, the law will take effect in 90 days all over the republic. No Smoking signs will be visibly placed in areas where smoking is prohibited, and the government will provide a phone number where citizens can report violations of the law. In addition, business owners who wish to allow smoking in their establishments will have 180 days to modify their property to close off an area for that.
The law also establishes new regulations for tobacco-related advertising, which from now on may only appear in publications geared toward adults or in places where only adults are allowed to enter, such as bars and nightclubs.

Last night was the last night of the Festival de Viña del Mar. On Saturday night Calle 13 tore it up, even performing in the dark after all the tech people had left the ampitheatre in the Chilean seaside city. In classic Calle 13 style, they made their performance relevant by bringing in local performers to participate with them up on stage and by shouting out their support of the Mapuche struggle. They also defied the mainstream reggaeton movement by dancing onstage, not with the skinny booty shaking girls, but with real sized women.

25 Feb 2008Puerto Rico’s schools were paralyzed last week as teachers all over the island walked off the job, demanding more pay, a cap on class sizes and a teachers committee which would help structure class schedules. The Orlando Sentinel reports that the strike got violent, as teachers and police clashed, leaving at least 2 protesters injured.
Meanwhile, some New Yorkers took to the streets to show their solidarity with Puerto Rico’s teachers:
The Sentinel reports that at least 90% of the island’s 1500 schools were shut down by the strike.

I admit I didn’t watch the Oscars last night. I was too busy watching Oscar nominated La Vie en Rose. The star of the film, Marion Cotillard, won the well deserved best actress award. But apparently there was a Spanish accent among some of the winners with Javier Bardem winning best supporting actor in “No Country for Old Men”, which also won Best Picture.
Cody Diablo, whose stripping blog I was a huge fan of, won best original screenplay for Juno.
