3:37 pm By Maegan La Mala · Activism|Education|Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico’s schools were paralyzed last week as teachers all over the island walked off the job, demanding more pay, a cap on class sizes and a teachers committee which would help structure class schedules. The Orlando Sentinel reports that the strike got violent, as teachers and police clashed, leaving at least 2 protesters injured.

Meanwhile, some New Yorkers took to the streets to show their solidarity with Puerto Rico’s teachers:

The Sentinel reports that at least 90% of the island’s 1500 schools were shut down by the strike.
