Teachers Strike in Puerto Rico

3:37 pm By Maegan La Mala · Activism|Education|Puerto Rico · Comments Off

25 Feb 2008

Puerto Rico’s schools were paralyzed last week as teachers all over the island walked off the job, demanding more pay, a cap on class sizes and a teachers committee which would help structure class schedules. The Orlando Sentinel reports that the strike got violent, as teachers and police clashed, leaving at least 2 protesters injured.

Meanwhile, some New Yorkers took to the streets to show their solidarity with Puerto Rico’s teachers:

The Sentinel reports that at least 90% of the island’s 1500 schools were shut down by the strike.

Academy Awards Yield No Surprises

8827780922_1203920281.jpgI admit I didn’t watch the Oscars last night. I was too busy watching Oscar nominated La Vie en Rose. The star of the film, Marion Cotillard, won the well deserved best actress award. But apparently there was a Spanish accent among some of the winners with Javier Bardem winning best supporting actor in “No Country for Old Men”, which also won Best Picture.

Cody Diablo, whose stripping blog I was a huge fan of, won best original screenplay for Juno.

Cuba Meet Your New (Old) President! Raul Castro.

8:22 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|Politics · Comments Off

25 Feb 2008

25cuba-span-600.jpgYesterday, in a not so surprising move, the Cuban National Assembly named Fidel Castro’s brother, Raúl, president. The unanimous decision has been interpreted by many as a continuation of brother Fidel Castro’s policies and in fact in his acceptance speech, Raul promised to finish big bro’s work. Any hopes of new leaders were squashed when 77-year-old revolutionary leader, Jose Ramon Machado, was named Vice-President.
