ufw-dolores.jpgFirst it was the “other” Kennedys — Bobby’s kids — and then César Chávez’s grandson. Now United Farm Workers of America co-founder Dolores Huerta is getting behind Hillary Clinton, and has some scathing remarks about opponent Barack Obama:

Hillary Clinton’s ties with the Latino community date back 35 years ago, while Barack Obama’s date back six months ago, said Dolores Huerta and Laredo’s political and community leaders at a meet and greet breakfast Sunday.

“She’s not the ‘Johnny Come Lately’,” said Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers union with César Chávez.

I don’t know what you all think, but I think this is a really strong endorsement for Hillary and could help her solidify her with the Latino community moving forward.

Huerta went on to say that she was none too happy about Barack Obama’s taking over of the UFWA’s slogan of “Sí, se puede” with his “Yes we can”:

“Now they’re copying our slogan, but you cannot build a relationship nomas con una palabra – just with one word,” said Huerta, referring to Obama’s campaign’s usage of the phrase.

Huerta seems to be tired of pandering to the Latino community when it’s election time, saying “You know that saying, nomas vienen a ver el nopal cuando tiene tunas…they only come to the cactus when it has fruit. That’s what this man is doing.”

r-OBAMA-VICTORY-huge.jpgIn large part, thanks to the vote of young people, Barack Obama won his party’s primaries in Hawaii and Wisconsin yesterday. And according to many media analysts, even Hillary Clinton’s base voters, white women, were split.

The Illinois senator’s Wisconsin victory left him with 1,303 delegates in The Associated Press’ count, compared with 1,233 for Clinton, a margin that masks his 145-delegate lead among those picked in primaries or caucuses. It takes 2,025 to win the nomination at the party’s national convention in Denver. Allocation of the 20 Hawaii delegates was not being calculated until later Wednesday.

DSC00018.JPGJust because I’m Puerto Rican doesn’t mean I don’t like some Dominican flavor (forget the rumors of Ricans vs. Dominicans). I know from experience that one of the hottest Dominican Independence Day celebrations outside D.R. is in NYC, more specifically in S.O.B’s. This February 27 promises to be no different with a concert featuring merenguero Shino Aguakate, Frandy Sax and DJ Lobo. And where there’s good Dominican music there’s got to be good Dominican food. S.O.B’s is serving a full Dominican menu, completito con kipes, chicharron de pollo y pasteles de platanos (damn save me a plate!)This is the only celebration in NYC on February 27th, the actual date of Dominican Independence.

Ticket Info: First 100 Ladies free, $10 Ladies/ $12 Gentlemen; Available on Ticketmaster and the S.O.B.’s Box Office, 212-243-4940. Doors open 7pm.

Special Thanks to Alex Damashek at S.O.B’s for providing pics and info. Now someone quick : offer to watch my kids so I can go!
