Latinos : Do You Do Dia del Amor y Amistad

14:18 H | Topics: Culture

valentines_day.jpgIn many Latin American countries, today is more than just about buying the most expensive gift for your opposite sex partner (at least that's what all the commercials on tv are telling me today is about). Valentine's Day is often translated as Dia del Amor y Amistad : A day about love and friendship. That's right, so that single people shouldn't feel bad because they didn't get crappy candy today or roses that will die really fast (and that probably were imported from Colombia where workers were grossly underpaid). Couples (of all sexual preferences and gender identities) shouldn't feel obligated to buy each other trite greeting cards or buy blood diamonds. If you're gonna buy into today at all, do it by saying and extra "te quiero" or doing something nice for your partner, friend, or neighbor. And if you aren't buying into today. Do something nice for yourself anyway. You deserve it!

So are you "doing" Valentine's Day? How? If you're not, why?

I didn't have time to get grumpy about not having a Valentine today because I was too busy running my daughter around to the dentist and taking care of errands. As I type, I am at the kiddie gym while my daughter is in her jazz/hip hop class. I almost forgot that it was Valentine's Day, to tell the truth. I guess that this year was ok.

I spent yesterday with HORRIBLE food poisoning, think it's time to go vegetarian ASAP, so it was not much of a day.Butl I normally just forget that it's even Valentines day, & mi novio believes it's more of a "friendship & appreciation" for all day anyway, so no biggie. I used to resent V-Day's attempts to make me feel bad, but now I just don't care. Except the discounted chocolate the week after is fun!
