alejandro_sanz250.jpgAlejandro Sanz, the Spanish pop star and outspoken critic of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, is receiving the support of several Latino superstars in his quest to “tell it like it is” about the South American leader. Sanz has released a letter of protest against Chavez’s banning of his upcoming concert in Caracas, and the undersigned supporters reads like a who’s-who of music, sports, movies and TV: Penelope Cruz, Jennifer López, Ricky Martin, David Beckham, and even…Shakira. In addition to all the entertainment luminaries, the Grammy’s Board of Directors also signed the letter. I guess Alejandro’s still got some major star power!

In a letter sent to Spain’s El Pais newspaper, Sanz thanks all that have supported him and ends it by saying: “For them and for all Venezuelans who have felt alone, my signature and my gratitude to all of you.”

Latinos : Do You Do Dia del Amor y Amistad

2:18 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Culture · 2 Comments

valentines_day.jpgIn many Latin American countries, today is more than just about buying the most expensive gift for your opposite sex partner (at least that’s what all the commercials on tv are telling me today is about). Valentine’s Day is often translated as Dia del Amor y Amistad : A day about love and friendship. That’s right, so that single people shouldn’t feel bad because they didn’t get crappy candy today or roses that will die really fast (and that probably were imported from Colombia where workers were grossly underpaid). Couples (of all sexual preferences and gender identities) shouldn’t feel obligated to buy each other trite greeting cards or buy blood diamonds. If you’re gonna buy into today at all, do it by saying and extra “te quiero” or doing something nice for your partner, friend, or neighbor. And if you aren’t buying into today. Do something nice for yourself anyway. You deserve it!

So are you “doing” Valentine’s Day? How? If you’re not, why?

Timber Mill Raids in Brazil

7:42 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Brazil|Environment · Comments Off

14 Feb 2008

forest.jpgNot too long ago , I wrote about the alarming rate of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. Well finally the Brazilian government has taken some action, raiding 8 illegal sawmills and confiscating 10,000 cubic meters of lumber.

Police began moving in on the sawmills in the town of Tailandia on Monday.

The town, which is home to dozens of sawmills, is in the south of Para state, one of the worst-hit areas by Amazon deforestation at the hands of loggers.

Hopefully this wasn’t a one-off of the Brazilian government and they will continue to make sure that more of this precious resource is not lost.
