Grammy Gold: Alejandro Sanz Takes it Home

10:34 am By Maegan La Mala · Celebrities|Entertainment|Music · Comments Off

11 Feb 2008

2004890585788630270_rs.jpgSpanish pop star and foe of Hugo Chavez Alejandro Sanz made off with the big prize for Latinos in the non-Latino specific Grammy event. Or “the real Grammys” as some refer to it. Sanz took home the statuette for Best Latin Pop Album

…for El tren de los momentos…Sanz overpowered Miguel Bosé (Papito), Jorge Drexler (Doce segundos de oscuridad), Luis Miguel (Navidades Luis Miguel) and Jennifer Peña (Dicen que el tiempo).

In my opinion, this was Alejandro Sanz’s worst album yet (in spite of Shakira’s helping him out), but given that competition it’s easy to see why he dominated the category.

Meanwhile, Dominicano Juan Luis Guerra took home the Grammy for Best Latin Tropical Album for La llave de mi corazón. PR’s Calle 13 walked out with an award for Best Latin Urban Album for Residente o Visitante. Best Tejano Album went to Little Joe & La Familia for Before The Next Teardrop Falls, and Best Mexican Album went to a personal fave, Pepe Aguilar, for 100% Mexicano.

If you didn’t catch the Grammys, the not-to-be-missed moments were Kanye West’s tribute to his mom and Amy Winehouse’s via satellite performance. Look for them on YouTube.

The ProLibertad Freedom Campaign denounces this LATEST ATTACK on the
Puerto Rican Independence Movement

Since the assassination of Filiberto Ojeda Rios in 2005, the FBI in
Puerto Rico has harassed and assaulted various pro-Puerto Rican
Independence activists in their witch hunt against Los Macheteros; a
clandestine revolutionary independence organization Filiberto Ojeda Rios led.

In the past few months, LUIS FRATICELLI, the director of the FBI in
Puerto Rico, has intensified these acts of repression by issuing
Grand Jury subpoenas to three young Puerto Rican Activists in New
York and Puerto Rico.

This past Thursday February 7th, the FBI in Puerto Rico arrested
Avelino Gonzalez Claudio, anti-colonial combatant and Machetero, for
his participation in the Wells Fargo Incident in the 1980s

The ProLibertad Freedom Campaign is calling on all supporters of
Puerto Rican Independence to join us as we picket this latest attack
on the Puerto Rican Independence movement

NO MORE PUERTO RICAN POLITICAL PRISONERS

Hugo Chavez Threatens to Halt Oil Sales to the US

9:31 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Venezuela · Comments Off

11 Feb 2008

chavez.jpgWhen he’s not insulting the U.S. leadership, Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez is threatening the United States, this time he’s threatening to cut off oil.

“If you end up freezing (Venezuelan assets) and it harms us, we’re going to harm you,” Chavez said during his weekly radio and television program, “Hello, President.” “Do you know how? We aren’t going to send oil to the United States. Take note, Mr. Bush, Mr. Danger.”

Chavez is referring to Exxon Mobil Corp.’s lawsuit seeking to win court judgments to seize billions of dollars in Venezuelan assets. The lawsuit was filed by Exxon after Venezuela nationalized it’s oil industry, causing Exxon and other multi-national oil co.’s to stop operations and recoup investments.

The U.S. is Venezuela’s number 1 oil client.

Yesterday Obama won the Maine Caucus and on Saturday, he swept the Louisiana primary and caucuses in Nebraska, Washington state and the Virgin Islands. This put opponent Hillary Clinton on the defensive, causing her to replace her campaign manager (and Latina)Patti Solis Doyle.

ballot.jpgBecause we are more than just votes, as the mainstream media would have you believe, three women of color chatted last week about the presidential race and well race. I was one of those women. Here’s a teaser:

Carmen: Maegan, does it piss you off that the MSM makes it seem like the ONLY issues Latinos care about is immigration? (As if ALL Latinos are illegal)
Lauren: Or as if a Puerto Rican in NYC is having the same thoughts as a Mexican American in El Paso, TX? Just because they both speak Spanish?
Maegan: Duh, because apparently we all just snuck through the border. There was a Fox commentator who asked Piolin , a Mexican talk host, if Latinos were going to vote for the person who gave them the most for nothing — the most meaning open borders, welfare, etc.

The chat was hosted by Lauren of Stereohyped and included Carmen Van Kerckhove of Racialicious.

Check out the entire conversation at Stereohyped.
