Super Tuesday: West Coast Polls Close in 1 Hour

First of all, if you’re here on the West Coast and haven’t voted yet, you have about an hour to get yourself to your polling place and vote. I just did that myself in San Francisco’s Chinatown, and the view from street here was (at least visually) a high turnout and a pretty seamless experience. Where as I normally arrive at the polls to an empty polling place, for the first time in years I had to wait in line. And luckily my fears about irregularities were assuaged. I got in and out and was able to vote not only for a Democratic candidate, but also for the hippie measures that we always vote on here in our beloved San Francisco. I had to laugh and even feel moved when I read the following municipal proposition: Do you want to make it City policy that San Francisco look in to obtaining Alcatraz Island from the federal government to create a Peace Center? I voted yes, of course.
And then there’s the big one. I didn’t vote in the primaries in 2004, and I must say that when I voted for John Kerry 4 years ago in the elections I did it with vigor. I was confident that our 4 torturous years of the Bush machine were about to come to an end. Sadly, we all know how that one turned out. Kerry just didn’t have the pizazz. He was a weak candidate, and lacked the ability to drum up any excitement.

5 Feb 2008I’m off to my polling place folks, and I’m hoping I won’t have face any of the irregularities that are being constantly reported both here and in Southern California when I get there. Here in San Francisco (video of our Super Tuesday above) and other parts of the Bay Area, many voters who aren’t registered with any political party (like myself) have been told that they aren’t allowed to vote in the Democratic primary. Not true!

Super Tuesday: California Voters Faced with Problems

Here in California, it appears that not is all going smoothly at the polls. The Los Angeles Times is reporting that in L.A many voters were met with problems ranging from having to cast provisional ballots to being asked to show identification:
Silver Lake voter Pedro Mas Mayor was upset when he was asked to show identification at his polling place. Mayor, 69, a naturalized citizen who has lived in the United States since 1966, said this was the first time he’d ever been asked to show identification when voting.“I told them it’s the law that you aren’t supposed to ask,” Mayor said. “I said, ‘Are you sure?’ She said, ‘Yes, you have to.’ She insisted. So I showed my ID and said, ‘I need a ballot.’ ”
Mayor said poll workers at the Sunset Boulevard Free Clinic were also asking white voters for their IDs. “They were asking everybody. I was a little upset, but I was able to vote,” he said.
Interesting that the L.A. Times notes that the voter was a naturalized citizen. Why is that relevant?
The Times also reports that many had to wait for polling places that did not open on time, and didn’t begin taking voters in until 5 hours after the scheduled time.

5 Feb 2008Jackson Heights, Queens, NYC, a huge immigrant hub, is seeing lots of flyers being handed out, many just reminding people to vote today. In Corona, a large Latino immigrant community, Barack Obama’s people were out flyering, or so I gathered by the amount of Barack Obama fliers being stepped on. Many campaigns don’t even bother with Corona some times because of the large amount of undocumented residents there.
Rego Park is seeing lots of heavy traffic but there are lots of machines so the lines are moving.
And a sad reminder that for some Latino voters, the vote isn’t important. One Cubana/Dominicana 30 year old pre-k teacher spoken to in Jackson Heights said she was too stupid to vote and that’s why she wasn’t voting. Despite many people telling her they would show her how to vote, she wouldn’t be convinced.

5 Feb 2008My prima is the Latina youth vote personified. An EcuaRican young twentysomething in college obsessed with social networking sites like YouTube and bochinche. Who did she vote for in today’s super Tuesday primary? Hillary Clinton. According to her, her friends, in the same demographic are split between Hillary and Barack Obama. Why did my cousin vote for Hillary? According to a telephone conversation with her, experience. She acknowledged that either candidate winning would be historic but that Hillary has been in the senate and she was a first lady, so she knows the ins and outs of the White House. She also cited Hillary’s health care initiative. And the best of all: If Hillary has any doubts, she can always refer to hubby Bill. It’s like getting two presidents for one!

If you’re like me, you’re still on the fence about which lever to pull inside the voting booth today. Well enter Minnesota Public Radio and their select a candidate quiz. The quiz asked you choose answers, using a multiple choice model, on the issues of Iraq, Health care, Abortion, Immigration, Education, Marriage, Taxes, Iran, Energy, Stem cell research, Social Security, The Death penalty, The Mortgage crisis, Gun control and Climate change.
