Opponents of rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Puerto Rico have pushed for a referendum to ban gay marriage on the island, and the government is letting it happen.
Puerto Rico’s governor said Wednesday he would not block a referendum to toughen a ban on same-sex marriage in the U.S. island territory even though he believes the proposed constitutional amendment is unnecessary and divisive.Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila told reporters he would sign the bill authorizing a May referendum if the measure gets the required two-thirds majority of votes in the island’s House of Representatives. It has already passed in the Senate.
The measure, Resolution 99, would establish that marriage is between two partners of the opposite sex.
It’s a sad day when Cuba is significantly more progressive on a human rights issue than Puerto Rico. What happened to this?

Green is the new black unless you’re the Amazon forest in Brazil which has recently seen a spike in deforestation.
In the last five months of 2007, 3,235 sq km (1,250 sq miles) were lost.
Officials say rising commodity prices are encouraging farmers to clear more land to plant crops such as soya.

Now that the great Latino hope in the race — New Mexico governor Bill Richardson — is gone, members of his presidential steering committee, some prominent Arizona Latinos, are getting behind Barack Obama. The Arizona Republic reports that it’s Obama’s work on issues that touch the Latino community — such as racial profiling — and his personal experience with immigration that makes him a strong bet for these Latino leaders:
John Laredo, former Arizona House Minority Leader, said that the work Obama, who is an Illinois senator, has done against racial profiling and other issues have benefited Latinos.“His history as a civil-rights attorney, in particular his focus on voting rights, his support of the Dream Act – those things are what matters to the Latino community here,” he said. “We need someone that’s not going to take our vote for granted.”
State Rep. Steve Gallardo, D-Phoenix, said Obama’s experience addressing the needs of people of color is documented. “Look at what he’s done for minorities and Latinos in Illinois,” he told Latino voters.
“When you look at education, health care, housing and particularly immigration, Obama has been at the forefront.”
Former State Sen. Alfredo Gutierrez said because Obama’s father was from Kenya, Obama can relate to many Latinos’ desire for immigration reform.
Could this be an indicator of Latino heavyweight endorsements to come? The more important question is whether Latino voters — in the Southwest and beyond — will join him.

23 Jan 2008A new advertising campaign for Sunsilk shampoo puts the lovely Shakira in the ranks of Marilyn Monroe and Madonna…at least when it comes to “hair icons”:
I found this on the Just Jared blog, where a debate has broken out on whether or not Shakira is “iconic” enough to share the spotlight with M and MM. What do you think?

23 Jan 2008Yesterday, the Grammy-nominated 20-piece ensemble known as Peru Negro launched a new CD Zamba Malató. To accompany the release they have 45 U.S. City three month tour.
The name of their new album, Zamba Malató, refers to an old chant sung by black women as they performed their daily chores. , The album, released on Times Square Records, is the long-awaited follow-up to their last release for the label, 2004′s “Jolgorio”. It continues the wildly celebratory Afro-Peruvian carnival of songs and dances that trace their history to the arrival of African slaves in Peru in the 1600′s.

Ah there’s a reason I don’t like Texas, besides the U.S. President being from there. Yesterday, the city council of Farmer’s Branch passed a resolution that makes it illegal to rent apartments or homes to undocumented people.
The City Council unanimously approved Ordinance 2952, which would require all renters to pay a $5 fee and claim U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status to obtain an occupancy license from the city.
Failing to do so would result in fines of $400 and up.
I don’t even think this is legal, from a Constitutional standpoint and I hope this gets caught up in the legal system. If I were in Farmer’s Branch I would urge all Latinos (because you know that is who is being targeted here) to do massive rent-ins, try rent as much as you can and refuse to pay that fee, protest those fees. Denying people the right to shelter is a violation of human rights and it’s disgusting and racist.

37 year old Jose Padilla, a Brooklyn born Nuyorican once accused of plotting to set off a dirty bomb with al-Qaida, was sentenced to 17 years in prison on charges that he supported terrorism. There was never any proof of any of the original charges so this lesser charge of being part of a support cell that sent recruits, money and supplies to Islamic extremists worldwide was a consolation prize so to speak. The judge who sentenced Padilla actually went below the minimum guidelines citing harsh treatment (torture) Padilla had received while held as an enemy combatant.
