Shakira to marry?

January 31st, 2008

shakira_060607_300.jpgIs Colombiana superstar Shakira ready to walk down the aisle with her bf Antonio De la Rua? That’s what Spain’s El Pais is reporting today:

According to Uruguayan press, everything seems to indicate that they will marry in San Carlos, a Uruguayan town close to touristy Punta del Este, as the couple has been asking for information at the courthouse.

Although the exact date of the ceremony is unknown, many Uruguayan websites are already talking about the guest list. Among attendees names like Alejandro Sanz and Penélope Cruz are being heard, and these two are supposedly whom Shakira has chosen as padrinos for the wedding.

I wonder if this is fact or rumor. We’ve heard this so many times before it’s gotten hard to believe. Plus the Mexican brujo says it won’t happen.

In other news, Shakira is filthy rich.

The Nader Threat

January 31st, 2008

jitcrunch.jpgRalph Nader’s threatening to run for president again, even though he’s one of the reasons why we got stuck with the arbusto in the first place:

Ralph Nader, the consumer advocate who ran for president in 2000 and 2004, said he is considering another bid for the White House because he believes the current contenders aren’t standing up enough to corporate interests.

“Look at the major areas of injustice, deprivation and solutions that are not being addressed by the major candidates,” Nader, 73, said in a telephone interview today. Among other issues, he cited the need for a “practical timed withdrawal” from Iraq, programs to crack down on corporate fraud and a rearrangement of the U.S. tax system.

That’s all well and good, Ralph, but didn’t you learn your lesson when you — along with the millions of people who voted for Bush — helped screw us back in 2000? Is your ego really that big that you could be selfish enough to risk doing that again?

This makes my blood boil. I’m all for opening up our system beyond the two parties — which (one more than the other) are greatly lacking on many fronts — but unfortunately a viable election between more than just Republicans and Democrats just isn’t a reality right now. So until citizens can look beyond just the two mammoth parties, Nader needs to back out.

Deportees : Do Not Sedate (unless you have permission)

January 31st, 2008

sedate.gifApparently at least 56 deportees were being sedated in a 7 month period in 2006 and 2007, without their permission and without there being any history of mental illness. While the policy of making undocumented people take psychotropic drugs won’t be done away with completely, it will now only be done as a last resort (yeah right) and agents must get a court order before administering drugs “to facilitate an alien’s removal.”
To get a sedation order from court, officials must show deportees have a history of physical resistance to being removed or are a danger to themselves.

The policy change came only after attention was drawn to the practice by a lawsuit filed by the ACLU.
