Well it’s winter, of course there is ice in Connecticut but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who have just been given the green light to train Danbury police.
A Common Council committee of the whole voted 19-2 Monday to recommend Police Chief Al Baker be given the authorization to enter into an agreement that would have some officers receive training from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The decision isn’t final and needs to go through at least one more approval process, but the proposal would train some (not all) Danbury officers, most likely detectives, to act as immigration enforcers. Those is favor of the measure say this is needed because of Federal inaction on the immigration issue. Those against the measure say that it will lead to racial profiling against Latinos or those looking Latino and increased fear and tension between police and the Latino community.

Please come demonstrate against this measure – at the final vote in the common council – if you can make it to Danbury. Probably 1,000 Immigrants attended a meeting to plan this rally to oppose ICE raids and harassment. The City Hall is located on the corner of Deer Hill Ave and West St in Danbury and the rally will be held at 6:00pm on that day – Wednesday, February 6
