Sadly, banned books are not exclusive to third world countries run by alleged dictators. Banned books happen right here in the USA. One of the latest is a book by Dominican author Julia Alvarez : How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents.
A mother with a daughter in a Johnston County high school cites Julia Alvarez’s novel about four sisters who must adjust to life in the U.S. after fleeing the Dominican Republic as inappropriate for the high school age group.
Profanity in the book and graphic content were cited as the reasons.

Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is debunking rumors that Fidel Castro’s political career is through. After meeting with him in Havana yesterday, the president was quoted as saying that he thinks that Fidel is “ready to go back” to his normal “political role” in Cuba. Contrary to rumors that Castro is on his last legs, Lula says that Castro is “incredibly lucid” and has “impeccable health”.
The above photo from Spain’s El País shows Lula playing photographer, taking a picture of his friend Fidel.

The wave of violence against grupero musicians in Mexico continues, with a new murder making headlines. The body of Jorge Antonio Sepúlveda Armenta, 20 –a.k.a. El Koquillo de Sinaloa — was found yesterday alongside a highway in rural Sinaloa state. The cause appears to be various gunshot wounds.
Next to Sepúlveda’s body, investigators found a burned truck and several 9 millimeter and machine gun casings. His death marks the 4th murder in the grupera community in little over a month.

Yesterday Mitt Romney won the Republican party primary in Michigan proving two things: 1- It’s easy to win in a state where your daddy was once governor and 2 – the Republicans across the country aren’t all behind the same person. Senator John McCain won in New Hampshire and Mike Huckabee won Iowa.
With 97 percent of the electoral precincts reporting, Mr. Romney had 39 percent of the vote, compared with 30 percent for Mr. McCain and 16 percent for Mr. Huckabee. Ron Paul, the antiwar congressman from Texas, came in fourth with 6 percent of the vote.
